Iran, May 19, 2020—Iranian regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had interesting remarks in his meeting with young members of the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Basij on Sunday, May 17, expressing grave concerns about the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) gaining influence and support among Iran’s younger generation.
“Everyone should be careful about the enemy recruiting members of our young society… I have always said that I believe and hope to have a ‘young and Hezbollahi’ government, meaning an effective and high-spirited government that can resolve our problems,” he said.
“In the early days of the [1979] revolution we had youths… for whatever reason that their beliefs were not strong, they were recruited by groups that had mixed perspectives,” Khamenei added in a reference to the high popularity of the MEK among the Iranian society, especially following the 1979 revolution.
“You should not allow the enemy take advantage of your protests. They are waiting to use any such opportunity… The enemy will portray your protests over whatever subject as dissent against the state, and provide such an image to their viewers… Be careful of those who take advantage of these protests to pursue their objectives against the state,” Khamenei continued as he further highlighted his concerns over the powder keg status of the Iranian society and the MEK reporting such developments as a sign of growing dissent among the general public.
“Time and again I have suggested to various officials to go and visit our universities and talk with the students. However, in response they say whenever we do go, the students’ objectives are not to be informed about the country’s issues; in fact, they are interested in tainting the state’s image. That is why officials don’t pay visits to our universities. I am asking you, please, do not prevent an atmosphere of dialogue,” Khamenei said in utter hypocrisy. However, his remarks do shed light on his concern about hatred among Iran’s youths, especially college students, vis-à-vis the mullahs’ regime.

“When I refer to a young and Hezbollahi government, I’m not saying that, for example, a 32-year old should become president. We need a young and active government that can resolve the country’s problems. There are those who work well into their old days and never get tired. For example, our dear martyr Qassem Soleimani whom I think about every day…,” he added, once again reiterating the rift among the regime’s senior ranks and how Khamenei lost his most devoted confidant in the death of former IRGC Quds Force chief Qassem Soleimani.
“Expand your ranks through new recruits. Don’t quickly push people off due to various disagreements… of course I don’t mean the [MEK]. I mean try to recruit those who may have slightly different viewpoints. However, I don’t advise appeasing people who don’t believe in our revolution,” Khamenei continued. His words first indicate the regime’s utter concern of losing the youth in their social base and the MEK gaining influence among Iran’s younger generation.
This is of grave significance following allegations raised by the regime’s judiciary against two highly praised college students having connections with the MEK.
“Everyone should be aware that they are working to influence our youth, to take advantage of our younger generation. Whenever they need elements inside the country, they focus their efforts on our youth,” he concluded.
