Iran: Khamenei claims regime not seeking nuclear weapons, considers it “wrong”

Iran, May 30, 2019 – Following remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump in Japan on his willingness to negotiate if Tehran does not seek nuclear weapons, Iranian regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei responded on Wednesday claiming not only his regime is not seeking nuclear weapons, but they also consider it “wrong.”

“We’re not seeking nuclear weapons. Not because of sanctions and the U.S., but because it goes against our principles and we consider it forbidden. There are those who say we should make nuclear weapons but never use them. This will have no impact for us,” he said.

Khamenei in his remarks revealed his objective in the recent terrorist attacks in the Persian Gulf parallel to seeking negotiations with the very countries his proxies were attacking.

“Negotiations are not (the Americans’) strategy. It is pressure. Negotiations are tactics they use in pursuit of their strategy. To counter their measures we must use our own pressure levers to decrease the pressure on our side… Our only method is to use our tools to exert pressure on the U.S. Of course, despite their propaganda, these tools are not military in nature. One example was when our National Security Council announced we are no longer fulfilling our commitments in two areas. This was the right move. Of course, if it becomes necessary, a military pressure could be used too” Khamenei added, referring to the regime’s decision to no longer abide by caps placed on the amount of uranium enrichment not exceeding 300 kilograms and 130 tons of heavy water production.

“For now, the resolution issued by the National Security Council will be implemented and whatever is needed will be decided accordingly. Such a stoppage is meaningless. For now, this resolution is enough. If needed we will use other levers down the road,” he added.

It is worth noting that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) is known to control the regime’s nuclear weapons drive. The U.S. State Department recently designated the IRGC as a “Foreign Terrorist Organization” (FTO).
