Iran, July 23, 2020—Over 75,300 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 347 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Thursday afternoon local time, July 23. The official death count declared by the regime stands at 15,074 around a fifth of the actual figure.
The death toll in various provinces include: 5,570 in Razavi Khorasan, 3,483 in Isfahan, 3,343 in Mazandaran, 2,940 in Lorestan, 2,380 in Alborz, 2,360 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 2,245 in West Azerbaijan, 1,990 in Hamedan, 1,950 in Golestan, 1,070 in Kerman, 890 in Hormozgan, and 785 in Alborz. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.
The spokesperson of the regime’s Health Ministry said on Thursday that 221 people had died of the novel coronavirus during the past 24-hour period and 3,667 patients are in ICU. She once again said 25 of the country’s 31 provinces are in code red and alarming statuses, adding “Covid-19 cases in most provinces, including Razavi Khorasan, continue to rise,” according to the regime’s official IRNA news agency.

The number of deaths “have increased by 50 percent since February and March, all the result of our actions and measures that we carried out in June, and the result of ending the lockdown,” said Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi on Wednesday. “I ask the people to hand out masks to others and I call on all religious leaders to encourage people to use masks,” he added, according to the semi-official ILNA news agency.
“Hospital statistics sometimes surprise me. For example, in one ICU branch, 57 or 58 members of a 64-member staff have contracted the novel coronavirus,” said Masoud Mardani, a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force, to state-run IRIB TV.
In Tehran, physicians are reporting situations similar to crises in Shohada Hospital of the Iranian capital’s Tajrish district. The hospital is facing a severe shortage in medical personnel. Due to the high number of patients, all other branches of the hospital have been prepared for coronavirus patients. Conditions are worse than the first peak. Nurses and the medical staff are exhausted and can no longer work. There is also a severe shortage in medical equipment and supplies, including masks, gloves, and special Covid-19 gears.
In Tehran’s Imam Hossein Hospital everyone is concerned about a third peak in the fall season. The entire medical staff is tired and exhausted. They are facing extreme financial difficulties and desperately need help. And yet the regime is refusing to provide any support.
“During the past 24-hour period 767 individuals have been hospitalized in various hospitals across [Tehran] province, of which 154 were directly taken to ICU sections. The number of our patients who were released have not increased the number of new patients,” said Alireza Zali, head of the Tehran Covid-19 Task Force, on Wednesday. “The patients who are entering our hospitals today are in worse conditions in comparison to previous days,” he added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

In North Khorasan province, physicians are reporting that the number of Covid-19 deaths in the city of Bojnurd alone have reached at least 720 from March to July 21. Medical and hospital equipment such as oxygen devices, respiratory devices, personnel protection kits, N95 masks and gowns for personnel, alongside disinfectants have become very scarce in Bojnourd and other cities of this province.
Eyewitness reports in Razavi Khorsan province are reporting 250 residents of Mashhad, mostly of the low-income class, have died of Covid-19 in the past three days alone. In this same period at least 90 people in the city of Sabzevar, 60 in Neishabur and 40 in Ghouchan have died of the novel coronavirus.

“Yesterday we witnessed a significant increase in in the number of people hospitals and Covid-19 deaths. This is considered an alarm bell for the province,” said deputy chief of the Razavi Khorasan Province Covid-19 Task Force on Wednesday. “Our medical staff members are in very dire conditions,” he added, according to the state-run Asre Iran daily. “Currently, 1,200 Covid-19 patients are hospitalized in Mashhad Medical Sciences University hospitals, of which 230 are in dire conditions.”
In Mazandaran province, the governor of Mahmoud-abad described the status quo as critical. “In the second Covid-19 wave the transfer speed of this illness has increased nine-fold and the number of coronavirus deaths in Mahmoud-Abad are concerning. The increasing trend of new cases in this city, parallel to our medical centers no longer having the capacity to accept new patients, is resulting in a decrease in the number of our medical staff members who can provide services to those in need,” according to a report wired on Thursday by the Mehr news agency, an outlet affiliated to the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).
“The record number of Covid-19 cases in [Ardabil] provinces is now broken. We are now forced to allocate all the province’s existing facilities to address the Covid-19 crisis,” said the deputy governor of Ardabil province on Thursday, according to the Tasnim news agency, an outlet affiliated to the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Quds Force.
