Iran coronavirus update: Over 52,800 deaths, third consecutive day of triple-digit deaths

Iran, June 17, 2020—Over 52,800 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 334 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Wednesday afternoon local time, June 17. The official death count declared by the regime stands at 9,185, nearly a sixth of the actual figure.

The death toll in various provinces includes: 4,315 in Khuzestan, 3,295 in Razavi Khorasan, 2,810 in Gilan, 2,805 in Isfahan, 1,965 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 1,815 in Lorestan, 1,485 in West Azerbaijan, 1,340 in Golestan, 705 in Kerman, 505 in Bushehr, and 410 in Hormozgan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

120 new coronavirus deaths and 2,612 new cases in the past 24 hours were announced on Wednesday noon local time by the Iranian regime’s Health Ministry spokesperson.

“In the past 24 hours leading to 12 noon today, a total of 254 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized across Tehran province. This is a 5.1 percent increase in comparison to the day before,” said Tehran COVID-19 Task Force chief Alireza Zali on Tuesday, according to state TV.

“A number of cities have been added to the list of red cities in [Razavi Khorasan] province and Mashhad remains a code red zone… The virus is spreading across the city and even under the city’s skin. Regarding the city of Taybad, considering the high number of hospitalized patients in the past few days, we have dispatched several ambulance busses and transferred numerous patients from Taybad to Mashhad,” said a provincial official involved in addressing the novel coronavirus threat in Razavi Khorasan province, according to local state TV.

ISNA quoted the dean of Hormozgan Medical Sciences University as saying, “In the past 28 days, the number of coronavirus deaths has had a fourfold increase. In the past 24 hours, 12 people have died of coronavirus. Eighty-five percent of patients who are put under ventilator lose their life. Presently, 44 people are in ICU and 22 of them are in critical condition. Until now, more than 250 health care workers have contracted coronavirus and their coworkers are extremely exhausted.”

In Golestan province, the dean of the Medical Sciences said, “Since a few days ago, the spread of coronavirus has been on a steep incline and five counties of Aq Ghala, Bandar Torkaman, Gonbad Kavus, Maraveh Tapeh, and Bandar Gaz are in critical conditions. At a certain time, there were 150 hospitalized patients in the province, but now there are more than 300 coronavirus patients who are hospitalized across the province.” (Source: Mehr, June 16)

IRNA reported on Wednesday, “If the spread of COVID-19 continues, all cities in [Golestan] province will enter code-red situation… The death rate and repercussions of the virus will only increase.”

In Bushehr, the deputy governor said, “In the past week, the number of cases has increased as much as the past four months. In the current week, hundreds of new coronavirus cases have been discovered on a daily basis. Some of them are in critical conditions and have been transferred to ICU.” (Source: Aftab News, June 16)

In Khuzestan province, IRNA reported, the dean of Dezful Medical Sciences University said, “All beds in Dezful’s large hospitals are being filled. Since last week, we decided to allocate one of the departments of Nezam Mafi hospital in Shush and a part of Karun Gatvand hospital to hospitalize coronavirus patients. After Ahvaz, Dezful has the most coronavirus cases in Khuzestan.”
