Iran coronavirus update: Over 499,400 deaths, omicron estimated to spread more than delta

Over 499,400 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Saturday afternoon local time, January 22. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 132,202, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 116,635 in Tehran, 40,210 in Razavi Khorasan, 34,635 in Isfahan, 30,140 in Khuzestan, 18,910 in Fars, 18,838 in West Azerbaijan, 17,248 in East Azerbaijan, 13,415 in Qom, and 9113 in Markazi (Central). This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Saturday as 30 deaths and 3503 new cases. Furthermore, 1216 patients are in ICUs and 426 of the new cases have been hospitalized.

“Providing a precise assessment of omicron’s spread across Iran is difficult. Some experts believe the figure to be around 30 percent, and there is a possibility of reaching 40 percent soon,” said Mohammad Hashemi, caretaker head of the Health Ministry’s Public Relations Office on Saturday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The increasing trend of omicron cases is crystal clear.”

Sixty percent of those seeking initial medical care and testing positive have contracted omicron. If a sixth wave takes place, the peak will probably be higher than the fifth peak with the delta variant. It is possible that in the future the coronavirus record in our country will be broken,” said Hamid Souri, an epidemiologist, on Saturday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The numbers of people seeking initial medical care and new cases have more than doubled. It appears that omicron is the main variant spreading in Khuzestan province. Considering that only one percent of coronavirus positive cases are also tested for omicron, we shouldn’t be relying too much on these figures,” said the caretaker dean of Ahvaz Medical Sciences University on Saturday regarding the rising trend of new coronavirus cases and omicron, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The increasing trend of new coronavirus cases can lead to a new coronavirus wave. The numbers of new cases and those having Covid-19 symptoms in Fars province are on the rise, and we are facing a concerning situation,” said the caretaker dean of Shiraz Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“Many provinces across the country have entered the sixth coronavirus peak and Kohgiluyeh & Boyer Ahmad province is just one step away from a vast spread of the sixth peak,” according to a statement released by the Yasuj Medical Sciences University on Saturday.
