The novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, has taken the lives of over 498,100 people throughout Iran, according to the Iranian opposition PMOI/MEK

“The number of omicron cases stands at 1162. In the cities of Tabriz, Yazd, and Shahrekord we have registered a death due to omicron, and there is one critical case in Ahvaz. The number of positive omicron tests have increased, and the alarm bell has sounded,” said Mohammad Hashemi, caretaker of the Health Ministry’s Public Relations Office on Sunday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“A new coronavirus wave spreading across the country is still possible. New cases are possible as long as there are people who have not been vaccinated,” said a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Sunday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.
“If the status quo remains as is, the next Nowruz (Persian calendar New Year due in March) will be the worst. It has been just three to four months since we were registering triple figure deaths and many people were in mourning. From yesterday we are witnessing deaths due to omicron, and this is an alarm bell,” said the director of the emergency branch in Tehran’s Sina Hospital on Sunday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The ration of Astra Zeneca vaccines has not been delivered to Mashhad. During the past 24 hours, 111 patients have been hospitalized and the total number of patients hospitalized stands at 353, of which 110 are in ICUs,” according to a statement released on Sunday by the Mashhad Medical Sciences University regarding Razavi Khorasan province.

In Khuzestan province, the secretary of the Ahvaz Health Council said on Sunday that the number of coronavirus-positive patients has increased five-fold in the past week in comparison to last week. The variants of these coronavirus positive patients were both delta and omicron, and omicron had the higher number of cases, this official added, according to the regime’s official IRNA news agency. In the coming month the number of people seeking initial medical care and those being hospitalized in the month after will probably rise significantly, the official continued.

“During the past 24 hours 70 coronavirus patients have been hospitalized and the total number of coronavirus patients hospitalized has increased to around 200,” said the spokesperson of Yazd Medical Sciences University on Sunday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.
