Iran coronavirus update: Over 493,900 deaths, new peak may be in two weeks due to omicron

Over 493,900 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Friday afternoon local time, December 31. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 131,606, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 115,480 in Tehran, 34,155 in Isfahan, 29,840 in Khuzestan, 18,655 in Fars, 18,628 in West Azerbaijan, 17,945 in Mazandaran, 14,428 in Alborz, 13,290 in Qom, 8988 in Markazi (Central), 8142 in Kurdistan, and 6313 in North Khorasan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Friday as 34 deaths and 1703 new cases. Furthermore, 2694 patients are in ICUs and 279 of the new cases have been hospitalized.

“It is not correct for us to say the number of omicron cases is limited to 30 or 34 confirmed tests. This figure is 100 percent higher. It has spread across the country. 20,000 tests conducted each day is too low for our country. As a country with a population of 80 million, we need to have at least one million tests per day. Now if it is not possible to conduct one million tests per day, we need at least 100,000 tests per day to provide precise stats of the omicron variant. The Scientific Committee of the National Covid-19 Task Force announced from the very beginning that it stands against the full reopening of schools. It is not right to have students sit in classrooms lacking ventilation and a proper atmosphere. It is dangerous to have a large number of students attend schools in person,” said a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Friday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“Around 2000 to 2500 people are seeking initial medical care each day. What we are concerned about is the overspread of omicron that can engulf the entire society with a high number of new cases,” said Nader Tavakoli, deputy chair of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Friday. “We don’t have the true number of omicron cases in Tehran,” he added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The number of coronavirus cases in the city of Doleijan has been increasing in comparison to last week,” said the chair of the hygiene apparatus in this city of Markazi Province on Friday, according to the regime’s official IRNA news agency.

“With 101 patients hospitalized in the past 24 hours, we currently have 575 patients hospitalized, of which 81 are in ICUs,” according to a statement released on Friday by the Shiraz Medical Sciences University about Fars province.

“We currently have 191 coronavirus patients hospitalized, of which 56 are in ICUs,” said the spokesperson of Yazd Medical Sciences University on Friday, according to the regime’s official IRIB news agency.

“Omicron has become the leading variant very fast, and we need to take this seriously. Despite all this, there are no sign of new limitations and/or restrictions. If we are slow in taking measures or show inaction, the next peak will be upon us in two weeks,” according to a piece published on Friday in the state-run Resalat daily.
