Defying the dictator’s heir: Zahedan Resistance Units expose the regime’s frailty following Khamenei’s death

On July 10, PMOI/MEK Resistance Units in Zahedan, southeast Iran, continued their weekly campaigns of defiance against the clerical regime. In their public activities, the activists displayed placards rejecting all forms of dictatorship and reaffirming their unwavering commitment to overthrowing the mullahs’ regime. Taking great risks, they held up messages declaring, “Down with the bloodthirsty tyrant ‘King’ Mojtaba! Damnation upon the bloodthirsty Khomeini and the despotic Khamenei!”

In the wake of Ali Khamenei’s death, the Resistance Units aimed their messages squarely at the regime’s desperate attempts to project power. Activists in Zahedan held a placard reading: “Khamenei’s funeral is a desperate, large-scale political and security farce designed to preserve the regime, force through the hereditary and artificial succession of ‘King’ Mojtaba Khamenei, and terrorize any rival factions.”

The reality on the ground during the highly militarized funeral confirmed this assertion. State-organized crowds were an illusion built on coercion. On July 6, 2026, reports indicated that over 70 percent of attendees were forced to participate under threats of job termination or the severing of vital financial aid from state welfare organizations. While the regime desperately tried to mask its vulnerabilities, the newly installed supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, was entirely absent from the public ceremonies, reportedly hiding due to injuries and fear of assassination.

“Today, the Iranian regime is weaker than ever, while the organized resistance of the Iranian people and their Resistance Units are at peak readiness,” another placard in Zahedan declared.

This weakness is palpable within the regime’s ruling apparatus. Mojtaba Khamenei has already proven incapable of filling his father’s vacuum, with nearly half of the Assembly of Experts refusing to support him. Furthermore, the facade of structural cohesion shattered during the funeral processions in Tehran when angry factions hurled stones and chanted “Death to the compromiser” at regime President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, a violent internal clash confirmed by the state-run Mardomsalari daily on July 7, 2026.

Against this backdrop of a crumbling regime, the Resistance Units issued a stern warning against opportunists. Under the banner of “Neither Shah nor Mullahs,” activists in Zahedan stated this foundational principle “signifies the absolute rejection of all forms of dictatorship and foreign dependence.” They emphasized that anyone attempting to steal the new democratic revolution is “severely mistaken.”

This message serves as a direct rebuke to the remnants of the Shah’s dictatorship, who rely on media-driven campaigns and virtual engineering to project false popular support. A newspaper affiliated with the ruling clerics recently acknowledged that the activities of monarchists are a “blessing” for the Islamic Republic because they sow division within the opposition. Tellingly, the Shah’s heir has openly stated that future change should be achieved with the assistance of the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) and the regime’s security apparatus.

The brave youth comprising the Resistance Units represent the true path forward for the Iranian people. Reminding the public of the heavy price paid for freedom, they displayed messages noting that the PMOI’s legacy in contemporary history is the “echo of the struggle for freedom.”

The Resistance Units follow the legacy of heroes like Vahid Bani-Amerian and his unit, who were executed in April 2026. To save their lives, all they had to do was utter a single word against the PMOI, but they instead told their executioners: “We do not bargain with you over our ideals, our beliefs, or our lives.” With this organized resistance on the ground, the activists in Zahedan proudly proclaimed: “The end of 120 years of tyranny and the birth of freedom and a democratic republic has arrived.”
