Iranian resistance units commemorate November 2019 protests

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, November 7, 2021—As the second anniversary of the November 2019 protests nears, Resistance Units across Iran are commemorating the nationwide uprising and pledging to continue the path of the martyrs who laid down their lives for freedom in Iran.

Resistance Units are a network of activists who support the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) who are playing an important role in countering the environment of suppression caused by the regime’s security forces.

In their activities, the Resistance Units installed posters with messages from Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), and Massoud Rajavi, the leader of the Iranian Resistance, in honor of the national uprisings and committing to continue the struggle for democratic regime change in Iran.

A poster in Tehran read, “Rebellious youth will write Iran’s destiny,” underlining the role of Iran’s new generation as the driving force of protests and uprisings across the country. “We can, and we must free the occupied nation through uprising and rebellion,” another poster read, a quote from Maryam Rajavi that highlights the Iranian Resistance’s deep belief that change in Iran will be accomplished by the Iranian people and their resistance movement.

A poster with the photos of protesters killed by security forces read, “Honor the memory of fellow martyred friends. Uprisings can never be put out,” conveying the message that those who sacrificed their lives in the nationwide protests did not die in vain and other youth are now bearing their flag and continue their path.

Posters and graffiti in Ardabil, Hamadan, Amol, and other cities conveyed similar messages, including “Down with [supreme leader Ali] Khamenei,” a slogan that has become very popular across Iran.

Protests sparked across Iran on November 15, 2019, after the Iranian regime imposed a sudden hike in the price of fuel. Under extreme pressure due to economic problems and decades of repression and corruption by the ruling mullahs, Iranians in different parts of the country took to streets to voice their protests. The demonstrations quickly turned into a nationwide uprising that called for the overthrow of the regime in its entirety. On the verge of collapse, the regime only managed to hold on to power by resorting to force and opening fire on unarmed protesters. At least 1,500 protesters were gunned down in the few days that the protests continued. Thousands of others were injured and arrested. Many others died under torture in the regime’s prisons. But despite the regime’s brutal repression of the protests, demonstrations continue across Iran, and the feeling of resent continues to linger across Iran. Regime officials are warning that another similar or perhaps more intense protest is looming.

The activities of the Resistance Units have increased despite intensified repression under the regime’s new president Ebrahim Raisi. With increasing of its domestic and international crises the regime is extremely worried about the spark of a new uprising. The regime knows the MEK can play an important leading role in new protests and therefore its leaders are extremely worried about MEK gaining support among defiant youths.

At the same time, supporters of the Iranian Resistance abroad held rallies in different cities and commemorated 2019 uprising. The demonstrators called for the condemnation of the Iranian regime and the prosecution of Raisi and Khamenei, whose hands are stained with the blood of thousands of Iranians.
