Iran, February 17, 2021—The Iranian opposition continued its anti-regime activities inside Iran in recent days despite the atmosphere of repression. The Resistance Units, the internal network of Iran’s main opposition movement the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), took to graffiti in various cities. Their slogans bravely targeted the regime’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
These activities are very courageous and a sign of the Iranian people’s rejection of the regime in its entirety. The Resistance Units organized their activities in Tehran, Shiraz, Tabriz, Urmia, Zanjan, Shirvan, Semnan, Yazd, Zabol, Shahre-Kord, Shahrud, Abadan, Kordestan, Bushehr, Rudsar, and Sari.
Also, posters of the Iranian Resistance leader Massoud Rajavi and Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), were installed in various cities, echoing slogans such as “Down with Khamenei, hail to Rajavi.”
In Zanjan and Tabriz, the slogans of the Resistance units read, “The people of Iran want neither the mullahs nor the coronavirus,” and “Revolt is the only answer to the mullahs.”
Iran’s society is on point of a revolution. Skyrocketing prices, a broken economy, a majority of the population that lives under the poverty line, more than 200,000 coronavirus casualties, and the regime’s suppressive measures are fueling the anger of the people. In the last two years, Iran has seen five major uprisings that shook the regime.
In these circumstances, the continuation of daily activities of the MEK Resistance Units is having a major impact on society. They have played a leading role in recent years' protests in 2018, 2019, and 2020.
Many regime officials and state-run media have repeatedly acknowledged the role of the MEK Resistance Units. On January 27, the daily Mardom Salary acknowledged the role of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) in revealing the regime’s secret nuclear weapon program and wrote:
“Those who blame the government and the Foreign Ministry have forgotten that it was the MEK who came with the nuclear issue and created a political uproar on the international level, which resulted in successive UN Security Council resolutions. They published reports about Arak and Natanz sites, and that caused problems. While some see the JCPOA’s inefficiency as the reason for [Donald] Trump’s withdrawal from the deal, they seem to have forgotten that he didn’t withdraw from the JCPOA for a year and a half, until the MEK launched its ‘Resistance Units’ strategy, which led to the 2017/2018 nationwide protests.”
