Rights organizations condemn execution of Iranian political prisoner Mostafa Salehi

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, August 8, 2020—Mostafa Salehi, a protester arrested during the December 2017 / January 2018 uprising across Iran, was executed recently despite a massive global campaign calling for the end of executions in Iran under the mullahs’ regime. International human rights organizations have issued strong condemnations following Salehi’s execution, emphasizing these inhumane measures will not prolong the mullahs’ rule.

The French Committee for a Democratic Iran issued a statement condemning this execution. “It appears that in the face of public dissent and a continuous rebellious status in Iran the ruling regime has no solution other than resorting to increasing executions… This execution sends a clear message from the religious dictatorship to Iran’s younger generation,” the statement reads in part.

The Canadian Committee of Friends of a Democratic Iran also issued an urgent statement on August 5 adding, “Mostafa Salehi was deprived of access to a lawyer and his execution is tantamount to the disappearances seen previously by the judiciary under the watch of Ebrahim Raisi, who himself was a member of the infamous ‘Death Committees’ during the 1988 massacre of political prisoners. We call on the United Nations to condemn the Iranian regime for this arbitrary execution. We also emphasize that inaction will be a green light to the Iranian regime for further executions. To prevent more crimes, the UN must dispatch an independent fact-finding mission to visit Iran’s prisons and interview the inmates. We call for measures to save the lives of the remaining political prisoners.”

The Hands Off Cain Human Rights Association in Italy issued its statement on August 6 condemning this execution. “[Salehi] was innocent and was condemned to death due to extreme pressures imposed by the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) intelligence services. Madam Maryam Rajavi, President of the Iranian opposition National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), strongly condemned Salehi’s executions. The religious fascism ruling Iran was forced to refrain from its intentions of executing eight protesters as a result of a massive online campaign calling for no executions. With this criminal execution the mullahs are seeking compensation and prevent further popular protests through establishing a climate of fear. The United Nations and Member States, along with international organizations and entities should immediately condemn this criminal execution. Dispatching international fact-finding delegations to visit Iran’s prisons and meet with inmates is more crucial than ever before,” the statement reads.

Dominique Attias, first vice-president of the Federations of European Bars, with over one million lawyers, wrote in this regard, “Stop executions. In the summer heat a disappointing execution by the Iranian regime has taken place. Political prisoner Mostafa Salehi, 30, was arrested for his participation in the December 2017 protests. Immediate reactions are needed from the European Union and France. Silence means collaboration.”
