Iran: Flood disaster continues in southern provinces

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, December 7, 2020—In recent days, heavy rains and floods have hit Bushehr province and officials have alerted people not to travel on roads. The state-run media reported that some roads in the province have been blocked by the flood. The roads from Deyam county to Behbahan and Hendijan, Borazjan to Genaveh, and Borazjan to Kazeroun have been flooded. Also, the heavy wind has caused power outages in Genaveh. The flood caused severe damage to a part of the roads and homes in Shabankareh and Vahdatiyeh counties.

To dampen the public outrage at the inaction and negligence of regime officials, the regime suspended the tenure of Sarbandar mayor Mohammad Abiyavi. On Saturday, December 5, the people in Sarbandar protested in front of the Judiciary and Municipality and demanded the resignation of incompetent city officials.

On Sunday, heavy floods in the southern parts of the country continued to cause damage in Bushehr province. Esmail Ramezani, head of the Khuzestan Red Crescent, announced: “Following heavy rainfall in eight provinces including Khuzestan, water has entered people’s homes in 15 provinces. Ahvaz, Bandar Mahshahr, and Sarbandar have suffered the most from the flashfloods. The flood has caused serious damage to people’s homes and roads.”

According to regime officials, in these areas, heavy floods and rain caused all companies in Mahshahr’s Special Petrochemical Economic Area to shut down. According to state-run daily Mardom Salari, these unfortunate incidents are happening while the citizens of these towns are outraged at the inattention of officials to their problems.

“In the last two years, Khuzestan province has experienced heavy rains and flood. During the winter and spring of 2018, the flood caused much damage to the villages of Khuzestan province, including Sousangerd,” wrote Mardom Salari. On December 5, the people of Mahshahr protested in front of the Governor's Office and City Council, against inaction of officials, regarding flood in the city.

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), expressed her deep sympathy with the Khuzestani people who face destructive floods. In a tweet, she stressed: “Mullahs’ destructive policies in wasting our nation’s wealth in unpatriotic nuclear, missile progs, the export of terror and war, made our people vulnerable to flood, earthquake, and COVID19.”
