Spokesperson for the regime’s Health Ministry said on Monday that 203 people had died of the novel coronavirus in the past 24-hour period and 3,375 people were in intensive care units. Regime officials are saying those in ICU are on the verge of losing their lives.

“Prior to this new wave, I had wrote to you forecasting these due to simplistic negligence,” Health Minister Saied Namaki wrote in a letter to regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei regarding the rising number of victims and to disclaim any responsibility in this regard, according to a piece published on Sunday in Javan daily, affiliated to the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC).

“Based on the latest numbers, more than 72 percent of the new cases end up being hospitalized in just 24 hours,” said Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi on Sunday from the IRGC Baghiatollah Hospital in Tehran. “Seventy medical staff members are working in this hospital alone,” he added, according to state IRIB TV.

“At one point the number of patients had decreased to around 30 to 40. However, these numbers and those hospitalized are now increasing and reaching near 200 hospitalized patients,” said the head of Baghiatollah Hospital on Sunday, according to IRIB TV.

Alireza Naji, head of the Masih Daneshvari Hospital Research Center, said on Monday that the reason for a shortage in test kits is “claims that we made earlier. We said we have domestic production of COVID-19 test kits, and this resulted in the World Health Organization to stop sending kits to Iran. And if we have a need, the Ministry needs to purchase them from foreign companies. There are no longer any donated test kits in stock. Anyhow, much of the raw material needed for the domestic production of these test kits do not exits and need to be imported,” according to the state-run Resalat daily.

“The number of COVID-19 cases in [Ardabil] has risen unexpectedly and is unprecedented since the beginning of this illness,” said a local public prosecutor on Monday. “This city will soon be listed as riddled with crisis in such circumstances. There is no option but to intensify measures,” he said, according to the regime’s official IRNA news agency.

“Currently, the number of coronavirus patients has doubled in comparison to the March/April period. The number of people in ICU sections have increased four or five-fold,” said the head of the Vali Asr Hospital in Birjand in eastern Iran on Monday. “None of the 11 cities in South Khorasan province are considered white areas… Currently, more than 90 percent of this province’s population are in dangerous and very dangerous areas when it comes to the virus spread,” he added, according to IRNA.

“Seventy of Isfahan’s emergency personnel have contracted the virus,” said the director of Isfahan’s Center of Incidents of Medical Emergencies on Sunday. “The capacity of our ICU sections is nearing their limits and therefore, providing medical treatment will become more difficult,” he added, according to the state-run Khabar Fouri website.

“The number of hospitalized COVID-19 cases and deaths remain high in [Kermanshah] province and we are still at the peak of the novel coronavirus,” said the head of Kermanshah province Health Center on Monday. “I say again that COVID-19 conditions in Kermanshah are not good at all,” he added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

All the while, the regime’s concerns over popular protests and nationwide uprisings grow with each passing day. The state-run Jahan-e Sanat daily wrote on Monday, “Officials are encouraging people to wear masks. However, to this day the government has not donated even five masks to the country’s poor. The government let the people loose for the sake of the economy and is now terrified of riots by the hungry!… The lower class, due to many unresolvable problems, has no choice but to pour into the streets for protests… These days the COVID-19 crisis has rendered a new crisis for people from all walks of life. There is no longer a middle class. In fact, no branch of the society can put food on the table… Living conditions in cities across the country are far worse than Tehran. And since they believe that their voices are not being heard by the officials, they are even more urgent in this regard… If officials don’t think of a solution, there will be protests in the future and we can no longer stop the people.”
