Iran coronavirus update: Over 50,300 deaths, “25,000 graves prepared”

Iran, June 8, 2020—Over 50,300 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 327 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Monday afternoon local time, June 8. The official death count declared by the regime stands at 8,351, less than a sixth of the actual figure.

The death toll in various provinces include: 4,045 in Khuzestan, 3,160 in Razavi Khorasan, 1,750 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 1,675 in Lorestan, 1,380 in West Azerbaijan, 1,085 in Fars, 995 in Kurdistan, 295 in Hormozgan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

Khuzestan remains in ‘code red’ and the provinces of Hormozgan, Kurdistan, East and West Azerbaijans, Kermanshah, Sistan & Baluchistan, Bushehr, and Razavi Khorasan are in alarming conditions,” said Kianush Jahanpour, the regime’s Health Ministry spokesperson, according to a report wired on Monday by the official IRNA news agency.

“The number of individuals who have contracted COVID-19 has been increasing in a number of cities in Razavi Khorasan province. Based on the latest Health Ministry reports, four cities in this province, including Mashhad, Torbat-e Jam, Taybad, and Saleh Abad are in code red circumstances regarding the novel coronavirus spread,” said the head of public relations in Razavi Khorasan Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the state-run IRIB news agency.

“With 345 registered new COVID-19 cases on June 8, this was the highest number of new cases in one day from the beginning of this illness. This indicated a quadruple increase in comparison to the day before,” said the dean of West Azerbaijan Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the state-run Khabar Online outlet.

In Khuzestan, spokesperson of the Jondi Shapour Medical Sciences University announced 829 on Sunday in the span of 24 hours, and a total of 19,910 cases across the province, according to the state-run IMNA news agency.

“The cities of Sanandaj, Qorveh and Marivan are in poor conditions regarding the spread of COVID-19. Conditions in the cities of Sanandaj and Qarveh are code red and as we go forward these circumstances will further evolve into a crisis,” said the head of Kurdistan province Planning and Management Organization on Sunday, according to the Fars news agency, affiliated to the regime’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC). The authority added, “Cancelling restrictions is the main reason of the spread of coronavirus in the province, especially in Sanandaj and Qorveh cities.”

“All the hospitals, including the state, private, charity, and those affiliated to various entities and the social security apparatus, must be ready to provide medical treatment for patients suffering from chronic breathing disorders. Currently, in Isfahan province, the city of Fereydoon Shahr is in code red conditions in regards to the coronavirus spreading,” said the deputy dean of Isfahan Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the IRNA news agency.

In South Khorasan, the president of the medical sciences university confirmed a “notable increase in the number of coronavirus cases” in the province, IRNA reported, and raised the alarm about the situation in Birjand and Nahbandan.

In Yazd, the deputy dean of the medical sciences university said, “The number of coronavirus patients and those susceptible to covid-19 in the province is on the rise. In the near future, all regions of Yazd province will become code red again.” (Source: Mehr News Agency, June 8)

According to Fars news agency, the president of Hormozgan Medical Sciences University  confirmed 341 new coronavirus cases and said, “The coronavirus section of Bandar Abbas [hospitals] is full.” IRNA quoted the governor of the province as saying, “The number of coronavirus patients has increased tenfold in comparison to early February.” The head of the Payambar-e Azam Treatment Facility in Bandar Abbas said that the number of coronavirus patients has increased by a factor of 2.5 in the past month, ISNA reported.

In Sistan and Baluchestan, the president of Zahedan Medical Sciences University said, “The spread of coronavirus in the province has changed dramatically in the past few weeks… We are currently adding 70-80 new hospitalized patients every day… Most counties are in a state of code red.” (Source: Iran Online, June 7)

 

The second COVID-19 wave is “threatening with severe intensity.

In the first wave, a maximum of 194 hospital beds were used in [Kermanshah] province. However, with the second wave, the beds allocated to coronavirus patients have increased to 312,” the Kermanshah governor said on Monday, according to the IRNA news agency.

“To adequately address possible future crises, such as an earthquake, the Tehran Municipality has 10,000 graves ready on a daily basis. Additionally, we have prepared another 15,000 graves in another site,” said the Director of the City Services in Tehran Municipality on Saturday during a meeting of the Tehran Province Crisis Management Coordination Council, according to the IRGC-affiliated Javan daily.
