Iran coronavirus update: Over 48,000 deaths, mosques reopen as crisis expands

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, May 30, 2020—Over 48,000 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 323 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Saturday afternoon local time, May 30. The official death count declared by the regime stands at 7,734, less than a sixth of the actual figure.

The death toll in various provinces include: 3,630 in Khuzestan, 3,505 in Qom, 2,520 in Isfahan, 1,470 in Lorestan, 1,315 in Golestan, 895 in Kurdistan, 540 in North Khorasan, and 215 in Hormozgan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

While the number of coronavirus deaths and cases is on the rise in Iran on a daily basis, regime President Hassan Rouhani announced on Saturday that mosques across the country will be reopening. “As of today, mosques will be open across the country while abiding by instructions for daily prayers… Shopping centers that were limited to being open until 6 pm will no longer be under such restrictions,” Rouhani said. “However, people shouldn’t think that we will return to pre-coronavirus conditions in 15 or 30 days. We need to change our lifestyle for a long time and accept the restrictions… We are in more difficult circumstances in comparison to the months of February to April… COVID-19 is circling and going from one province to another,” he added.

While regime officials and experts are complaining of a shortage in medical supplies and excruciating pressure on the country’s medical staff, Rouhani focused his daily lies in denying such remarks. “We have no problems when it comes to medical equipment. People should know that our physicians and nurses have everything they need and there are no shortages. We have all the supplies needed to equip our hospitals and the ventilators needed. We have no problems in this regard. The spirit of our physicians and nurses is very high, and we have the equipment and supplies we need,” Rouhani claimed.

Deputy Health Minister Ghasem Janbabaie had conflicting remarks. “From the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic in Iran over 10,000 of our medical staff, including physicians and nurses have contracted COVID-19… We have also lost a number of these dear souls,” he said on May 29, according to the Fars News Agency, associated with the regime’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC).

According to physicians, from May 21 to the 28th, at least 410 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized in the Ganjuian Hospital of Dezful alone and at least 49 of these patients lost their lives. Dezful is located in Khuzestan province in southwest Iran. Circumstances are especially dire in the villages surrounding Dezful. The resulting pressure imposed on the hospital medical staff is extremely high and the weather is awfully hot, making it even more difficult for nurses. Most of these nurses are contracting COVID-19 or suffering from skin illnesses. To add insult to injury, their paychecks and pensions have been constantly postponed for the past year.

“From May 28th to the 29th, a total of 740 confirmed cases have been registered in Khuzestan,” according to the spokesperson of Jondishapour Medical Sciences University in Ahvaz. “The number of COVID-19 cases in Khuzestan has increased to 13,528… in the past 24 hours, 16 people have lost their lives and the number of COVID-19 deaths in this province has reached 530,” he added, according to a May 29 report wired by the state-run Mehr News Agency, affiliated to the regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS). Furthermore, the dean of the Abadan Medical Sciences University reported 161 new COVID-19 cases. “The number of coronavirus cases in the southwest area of Khuzestan province has increased to 1,454 cases,” according to a May 29 report wired by the state-run Borna news agency.

“We are concerned about an increase in hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the past few days,” said the deputy dean of health affairs in Tabriz Medical Sciences Universities in northwest Iran on Saturday. “We have around 100 positive COVID-19 cases and the number of hospitalized patients and those not hospitalized may climb over the capacity of our health and medical care system. This will lead to a crisis in our provinces,” he added, according to the Javan daily, another outlet affiliated to the IRGC.

Javan also quoted the dean of Iranshahr Medical Sciences University in Sistan & Baluchistan province as saying, “Iranshahr, Chabahar, and Sarbaz have the highest number of cases. Nearly the entire Baluchistan area is red and contaminated with the virus.”

The president of the Medical Sciences University in Kermanshah said, “Until two weeks ago, we were witnessing a downward trend of patients and deaths, but presently, we are faced with an increase in the number of cases, hospitalized patients, and unfortunately deaths…  We have no white cities in the province, the conditions of four counties in Kermanshah are red and ten other counties have entered yellow status… If the trend continues, we predict that by the end of summer, 46 percent of the province's population and 47.5 percent of the country’s population will have contracted coronavirus.” (Source: IRNA, May 30)

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), described Rouhani’s contradictory remarks as a sign of the regime’s desperation and said that the reopening of markets and mosques is a criminal measure by Rouhani and regime supreme leader Ali Khamenei and will only result in more tragedies among the Iranian population.
