“Conditions in the country’s northwest areas are concerning. There is a possibility that soon we will witness a flood of this illness in these province,” said a senior Iranian epidemiology expert on Thursday. “Concerns over the entrance of new variants are completely correct. These viruses are currently detected in neighboring countries. Furthermore, suspicious cases in some provinces in the northwest have been seen. Unfortunately, the country lacks an apparatus to monitor and identify variants for us to understand what percentage of the people have contracted the lambda or other variants,” this official added, according to the state-run Jame’e 24 website.

“Comparing the latest stats provided by the Health Ministry up until yesterday to [Saturday], we see that the number of new cases per day has witnessed a 36.7 percent increase, reaching 17,564. Once again, we are reaching the 20,000 mark of new cases per day,” reads a report wired on Thursday by the Tasnim news agency, an outlet linked to the regime’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Quds Force.
