Iran coronavirus update: Over 350,000 deaths, hospital conditions described as “horrible”

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, August 6, 2021—Over 350,000 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Friday afternoon local time, August 6. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 93,086, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 81,976 in Tehran, 23,645 in Isfahan, 22,156 in Khuzestan, 21,325 in Razavi Khorasan, 13,578 in East Azerbaijan, 13,550 in Mazandaran, 12,678 in West Azerbaijan, 12,032 in Fars, 11,281 in Gilan, 10,228 in Alborz, 10,155 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 8728 in Kerman, 8265 in Golestan, 6473 in Kermanshah, 6107 in Yazd, 6010 in Hormozgan, 5737 in Kurdistan, 5505 in Semnan, 4215 in Ardabil, 3999 in Bushehr, 3959 in Qazvin, 3705 in Zanjan, 3246 in South Khorasan, and 2674 in Kohgiluyeh & Boyer Ahmad. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Friday as 458 deaths (highest in 101 days) and 34,913 new cases. Furthermore, 6279 patients are in ICUs (new pandemic record) and 4381 of the new cases have been hospitalized.

“The number of people contracting the delta variant of coronavirus continues to rise and hospitals running out of empty beds is a warning sign,” said Alireza Raisi, spokesperson of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Friday, according to state TV.

“Currently we are in the fifth Covid-19 wave and conditions in our hospitals are horrible, meaning empty beds are extremely hard to find. As long as the number of people entering our hospitals are rising, the death toll will also rise, unfortunately,” said Masoud Mardani, a senior member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Friday. “If a shutdown is to be imposed like the recent six-day period, it won’t be any good. The number of new cases will actually increase, not decrease, because all facilities and stores are open, the roads are open and commuting continues,” he added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“Considering the fact that the lockdown plan was turned down in Tuesday’s meeting of the National Covid-19 Task Force, the importance of this issue has yet to be understood,” said Alireza Zali, head of the Tehran Covid-19 Task Force on Friday. “There is an enormous amount of pressure on our medical professionals. An effective closure in our opinion means lockdown, and anything else would not be effective. In fact, temporary or incomplete shutdowns will not be effective at all. We believe a complete lockdown is necessary,” he added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“4209 people are hospitalized in [Fars] province, of which 340 are in ICUs. During the past 24 hours we have lost 32 patients to coronavirus,” according to a statement released on Friday by the Shiraz Medical Sciences University.

“Our hospitals have run out of empty beds and [Ardabil] province is in critical conditions. We may have to place patients in facilities such as houses of prayer, hospital courtyards, and anywhere else we may be forced to,” said the dean of Ardabil Medical Sciences University on Friday, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“We currently have 2845 hospitalized patients, of which 393 are in ICUs. During the past 24 hours we have lost 27 patients to Covid-19,” said the dean of Isfahan Medical Sciences University on Friday, according to the Mehr news agency.

“During the past 24 hours we have had a record number of people seeking medical care for Covid-19 symptoms. May we never see the day when our medical professionals will not be able to provide medical care for patients,” said the dean of Ahvaz Medical Sciences University on Friday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“Hospitals are reaching their limits. Currently we have 1191 hospitalized patients, of which 232 are in ICUs,” said the dean of West Azerbaijan Medical Sciences University on Friday, according to the semi-official ILNA news agency.

“The entire medical capacity of Kohgiluyeh & Boyer Ahmad province is reaching its limits. On Wednesday we had 1500 people seeking medical care for Covid-19 symptoms. This was unprecedented in the past 28 months,” said the dean of Yasuj Medical Sciences University on Friday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.
