Iran coronavirus update: Over 313,800 deaths, number of red cities and towns increasing

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, June 18, 2021—Over 313,800 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Friday afternoon local time, June 18. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 82,619, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 73,566 in Tehran, 21,100 in Isfahan, 19,766 in Khuzestan, 19,085 in Razavi Khorasan, 12,430 in Lorestan, 10,456 in Gilan, 7326 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 7043 in Kerman, 4325 in Hormozgan, 3309 in Bushehr, 3276 in Ilam, 2585 in Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari, and 2454 in Kohgiluyeh & Boyer Ahmad. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

“During the past 24 hours the rising trend of this horrible illness continues in the country’s southern and southeast areas. The Indian variant is inflicting new problems for medical professionals,” reads a Friday report of the Tasnim news agency, an outlet linked to the regime’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Quds Force. “Since yesterday, the country’s 13 red cities have witnessed a 69 percent increase and we currently have 22 red cities. This confirms the fact that a new epicenter of crisis has taken shape and can quickly transform into an uncontrollable crisis engulfing the entire country,” the report adds.

In Bushehr province dean of the local Medical Sciences University reported on Friday that cities and towns located in the southern areas of this province are reaching extremely dangerous circumstances. “Five cities are registered as red zones. Four other cities are orange zones,” the official said, according to the Tasnim news agency.

“9983 people are quarantined in their homes. Considering the fact that the UK variant is being replaced by a new variant, all stats reported from this day forward will be of those who have contracted the new variant,” said the spokesperson of Hormozgan Medical Sciences University on Friday, according to the IMNA news agency.

“The city of Andimeshk was registered as a yellow zone and is now considered a red zone,” said the dean of Ahvaz Medical Sciences University on Friday. On this same day, the dean of Abadan Medical Sciences University reported an increasing number of people being hospitalized for coronavirus in the southwest areas of Khuzestan province. “During the past 24 hours, 121 of the 263 tests conducted have been confirmed as positive Covid-19 cases. During this period, we had 41 people hospitalized and 28 released,” this official added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The number of people being hospitalized continues to rise and currently we have 310 people hospitalized for coronavirus,” according to a statement released by the Golestan Medical Sciences University on Friday.

“We still need to carefully impose the health protocols. In [Fars] province 24 percent of our tests are positive, and 200 patients are hospitalized on a daily basis,” said the deputy governor of Fars province on Friday, according to the Tasnim news agency.

“Of the 23 cities and towns, 13 are registered as orange zones and ten as yellow zones. Our two neighboring provinces, meaning Hormozgan and Sistan & Baluchistan, are registered orange and hyper-red zones. Commuting between these two provinces and Kerman province are a source of significant concerns,” said the spokesperson of Kerman Medical Sciences University on Thursday, according to the Tasnim news agency.
