The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 69,574, around a fourth of the actual figure.

“We are currently at the highest number of people hospitalized for coronavirus. We have yet to reach the death peak. After this we will remain in a daunting peak of three-digit death figures, and I hope we do not see four-digit daily death counts. We say this is a red zone, but the measures are similar to yellow zones. This leads to my colleagues collecting dead bodies,” said Health Minister Saied Namaki on Sunday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“18 provinces are seeing an increasing trend in their numbers and seven are rising significantly. These are the conditions when viruses mutate. It appears the mutated Indian strain is a combination of the Brazilian and UK strain. That is why it is spreading at such a fast rate and has a high death toll. We may even have a mutated Iranian strain,” said Alireza Raisi, spokesperson of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Sunday.

“Certainly, our death toll is high and maybe even higher than the numbers announced. Many of the people who contract the virus are not even registered. They go to a hospital and even there their names are not registered,” said Masoud Mardani, a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Sunday. “If, God forbid, they have a severe case of this illness, they are transferred to the ICU where they may be tested or not. Many of the people who seek medical care are very reluctant about going to a hospital. They are not registered in the stats. Therefore, it is quite certain that the numbers announced are a fraction of the actual figure,” he added, according to state TV.

“The increasing number of deaths and new cases is seen in nearly all provinces across the country. We are expecting to witness an increase in deaths due to Covid-19 in the coming days,” said the head of emerging and remerging diseases research center of the Pasteur Institute in Tehran. “A ten-day restriction period is not enough to have an impact. The restrictions imposed in other countries with similar conditions are from two weeks to one month,” this official added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

Mehr News Agency quoted Hamid Emadi, the head of the infectious diseases section of Tehran’s Khomeini hospital, as saying on Sunday, “The number of incoming patients is very high, and we can’t hospitalize patients that we would have hospitalized before Nowruz to reduce the load of hospitals… Unfortunately, in the fourth Covid-19 wave, we are witnessing an increasing number of critical patients. There are more than 5,000 patients in ICU who are in bad conditions.”

According to the same publication, the head of the Rasoul Akram hospital said, “We hadn’t seen so many incoming patients until now.”

The spokesperson of Isfahan Medical Sciences University reported 1,680 new Covid cases on Sunday, according to Mehr News Agency. The dean further confirmed that 430 patients were hospitalized while only 275 people were discharged from hospitals. Another 39 lost their lives.

The dean of Alborz Medical Sciences said on Sunday that 32 Covid-19 patients died in the past day, according to the official IRNA news agency.

In South Khorasan province, the secretary of the Covid-19 Task Force said on Sunday, “Due to the eightfold increase of Covid-19 patients, 70 percent of all hospitals beds are occupied.” (Source: ISNA news agency)

According to ISNA news agency, on Sunday, Kermanshah Medical Sciences University declared 14 Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, which is unprecedented in the past few months and is a record. The university confirmed 815 hospitalized cases and 142 patients in ICU.

Qazvin Medical Sciences university declared on Sunday that in the past 24 hours, 556 new coronavirus cases were identified, and 123 new patients were hospitalized. The hospital confirmed nine Covid deaths.
