Iran coronavirus update: Over 104,500 deaths, expert warns of “600 daily deaths in November”

Iran, September 17, 2020—Over 104,500 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 439 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Thursday afternoon local time, September 17. The official death count declared by the regime stands at 23,808, around a fifth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 7593 in Razavi Khorasan, 5112 in Mazandaran, 4854 in Isfahan, 4648 in Lorestan, 4301 in Gilan, 3063 in East Azerbaijan, 2916 in Fars, 2951 in Alborz, 2756 in West Azerbaijan, 2687 in Hamedan, 2422 in Kermanshah, 2041 in Kurdistan, 1804 in North Khorasan, 1441 in Hormozgan, 1354 in Yazd, 996 in Zanjan, 879 in Ilam, and 771 in Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

While the coronavirus crisis has engulfed all of Iran and regime officials are describing the status quo as “red,” crisis and stormy conditions across the country, and the medical apparatus crumbling, regime President Hassan Rouhani resorted to further ridiculous remarks today. “I hope we can support our physicians, nurses, and medical workers in order to, hand in hand, reach new glories, just as we have not been behind advanced countries regarding our stats,” he said on Thursday.

“This week the number of red cities increased from 88 to 109, and the number of alarming cities from 90 to 108,” said the regime’s Health Ministry spokesperson on Thursday, according to the regime’s official IRNA news agency.

“In the past 24 hours the number of new Covid-19 cases hospitalized in Tehran’s hospitals were 720, of which 147 were placed in ICUs. All the while around 420 patients were released,” said Alireza Zali, head of the Tehran Covid-19 Task Force on Wednesday. “About everyday we are faced with an increasing number of people seeking medical treatment for coronavirus in Tehran. We need to take into notice that the third wave has begun in Tehran and next week we will be facing a fast increase in this regarding in the city of Tehran,” he added, according to the officials IRIB state TV.

“If we continue this trend our daily death rate will reach 600 in November. Right now, unfortunately we have entered yet another catastrophe,” said a senior official in Tehran’s Masih Daneshvari Hospital on Wednesday, according to the state-run Khabar Fouri website.

 

 

“During the past few days 163 students have contracted Covid-19 and of 2,863 students at least one member of their family has contracted the illness. During this period 48 teachers have contracted the virus and 183 teachers in this province have a family member contracting the virus,” said the deputy dean of Isfahan Medical Sciences University on Wednesday. “From mid-summer the conditions of the Covid-19 spread in this province became more difficult and complicated. The number of new cases and deaths will increase four to five-fold,” he added, according to IRNA.

“We will have deadly days ahead of us. Since last week the number of new cases has increased significantly and have been around five times more than last week,” said the head of Shushtar Medical Sciences University in southwest Iran on Wednesday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

 

 

Mehr News Agency, affiliated with the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS), reported on Thursday: “Since September 10, the spread of coronavirus has been accelerating in [Kurdistan] province, and this growth persists. What’s more alarming is the growing number of hospitalized patients in all counties of the province.” Mehr quoted the healthcare deputy of Kurdistan Medical Sciences University as saying, “This issue will result in another peak of the disease and the return of high death tolls. This peak can be more violent than the one we experienced in June and July.”

The state-run Resalat newspaper wrote on Thursday: “Iran is among the five critical countries with highest deaths in a single day. This is while Iran stands at the nineteenth place in terms of population. This means the rate of spread and death in Iran is higher than the global average. The instructions change so frequently that many citizens don’t know whether they have to go to their workplace or work from home at the beginning of the week. They don’t know whether Tehran’s traffic plan has been cancelled or stayed in place.”
