The oppressive regime of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, one of the most notorious criminals of the 21st century and a key ally of the Iranian regime, was ultimately overthrown by Syrian rebels and the people. After five decades of resistance, torture, and unyielding determination, the long-suffering Syrian people triumphed, their victory marked by countless martyrs.
With the fall of Tehran’s closest ally in the Middle East, the clerical regime’s strategic depth crumbled, triggering alarm in Tehran.
Twelve years ago, Mehdi Taeb, head of the regime’s Ammar Headquarters, remarked, “If the enemy attacks us and aims to seize Syria or Khuzestan, our priority must be to hold Syria. If we hold Syria, we can reclaim Khuzestan. But if we lose Syria, we cannot even defend Tehran” (Asr-e Iran, February 15, 2013).
In a statement, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), congratulated the people of Syria, especially the revolutionary and rebellious youth, political prisoners, and the families of hundreds of thousands of martyrs of the Syrian Revolution, and said, “With the overthrow of a regime that for the past 45 years helped the religious fascism in Iran commit the greatest crimes against the people of Syria, the people of Palestine and Lebanon, the dark days of this region are turning the page, and the time has come for the overthrow of the mullahs’ regime. Now the “strategic depth” of the religious dictatorship in Iran has collapsed and the regime must be expelled from all countries in the region. The expulsion of the clerical regime from Iraq and other countries in the region has been a long-standing demand of the Iranian Resistance. This is the prelude to the liberation of the Iranian people from the evil of religious fascism.”

Mrs. Rajavi also congratulated the Iranian people and resistance on the Syrian dictator’s fall, stating, “or our oppressed people and the suffering families of the 120,000 martyrs of Iran’s path to freedom, this is a source of healing for the hearts of those who see the victory of the oppressed people of Syria. The very same people who Khamenei and his Revolutionary Guards were directly involved in the slaughter of at least half a million of them and the displacement of millions of others.”
Rajavi added, “Today is a day when everyone can see how Assad’s armed forces, which had the greatest support from the Iranian regime, were dismantled. The Revolutionary Guards and Khamenei’s intelligence and security forces will not have a better fate than them in the face of the Iranian people’s uprising and organized resistance. The notorious Saydnaya Prison north of Damascus was conquered by Syrian rebels. The conquest of the notorious Evin prison and other prisons of the regime of executions and massacres by rebellious youth and the PMOI is not far away.”
