Resistance Units marked the 61st anniversary of the founding of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) with 61 operations against regime centers, institutions, and propaganda across Iran.
The operations, reported on September 5, 2026, extended from Tehran, Karaj, Mashhad, and Shiraz to Kermanshah, Bushehr, Chabahar, Iranshahr, Bam, Sarbaz, Maragheh, and other cities. Targets included IRGC Basij facilities, regime buildings, intelligence and surveillance signs, institutions associated with the regime’s repressive apparatus, and propaganda featuring senior regime figures.

The number carried its own anniversary message. The PMOI report presenting the campaign described it as “61 operations” marking 61 years of struggle against the dictatorships of the Shah and the clerical regime.
Operations span cities and different pillars of the regime
In Tehran, Resistance Units targeted a regime building and repeatedly set fire to signs and billboards associated with the regime’s surveillance apparatus. Other operations burned posters of Ali Khamenei and Mojtaba Khamenei.
In Mashhad, Resistance Units targeted the entrance and facilities of institutions for spreading fundamentalism and terrorism, alongside large propaganda posters of the regime leadership. In Kermanshah, operations targeted a Basij base and regime propaganda billboards. Basij facilities were also targeted in Javardeh, Chabahar, Bam, Torbat-e Jam, Iranshahr, and Sarbaz.

The campaign also reached Iran’s southeast. In Chabahar, Resistance Units targeted a Basij facility, leadership billboards, a sign associated with the regime’s intelligence and informant network, and propaganda depicting military commanders. In Iranshahr, several operations targeted Basij facilities and another regime building.
Other reported actions included operations against regime buildings in Gorgan, Bushehr, and Farsan, and the burning of propaganda in Qazvin, Birjand, Maragheh, Borazjan, and Arak.
The geographical spread reflected a campaign extending well beyond the capital and encompassing western, northeastern, southern, and southeastern Iran.
Targeting repression, surveillance, and propaganda
The choice of targets reflected several recurring themes in Resistance Unit operations.
Basij facilities constituted one prominent category. This is the main organ tasked with suppressing protests and dissidents. The Resistance Units also targeted regime buildings and centers of terrorism and fundamentalism. Importantly, these operations took place amid heightened security measures and extensive CCTV surveillance.
Another recurring target was the regime’s surveillance and informant apparatus. In Tehran, multiple signs directing people to Ministry of Intelligence facilities were set on fire, while an IRGC-linked informant sign was targeted in Chabahar.

Burning the symbols of the regime’s leadership
Another major feature of the operations was the repeated targeting of regime leadership imagery.
Resistance Units burned posters and billboards featuring Ali Khamenei in Tehran, Karaj, Mashhad, Bushehr, Borazjan, Qazvin, Shiraz, and Maragheh. Images of Mojtaba Khamenei were targeted in Tehran, Mashhad, Shiraz, Birjand, Chabahar, and Maragheh. Posters of Qasem Soleimani were also burned in Kermanshah and Arak.

These activities come after the regime’s leadership transition following Ali Khamenei’s death in 2026 and Mojtaba Khamenei’s elevation as Supreme Leader.
This also connects the operations to the slogans Resistance Units displayed during the anniversary campaign, including “61 years of neither Shah nor mullahs” and “Death to the oppressor, be it the Shah or the Supreme Leader.”
Sixty-one operations for 61 years of struggle
The PMOI was founded on September 6, 1965. Throughout this year’s anniversary activities, Resistance Units have framed its history as 61 years of opposition to both the Shah’s dictatorship and the clerical regime, while promoting freedom and a democratic republic.
The 61-operation campaign translated that anniversary message into another form of activity. Some operations were also accompanied by slogans including “Death to Khamenei, hail to Rajavi” and “Long live the National Liberation Army.”
With their 61 operations, the Resistance Units conveyed the message that the PMOI’s six decades of struggle not as a completed historical chapter, but as a confrontation they are continuing inside Iran today.
