Iran’s ‘No to Executions Tuesdays’ campaign reaches 129th week across 58 prisons

On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, political prisoners across Iran held the 129th consecutive week of the “No to Executions Tuesdays” hunger strike. With the recent addition of Borujen Prison, the campaign now spans 58 facilities nationwide. In their weekly statement, the striking prisoners highlighted the escalating use of the death penalty, noting that at least 3,888 people have been executed during the two-year tenure of the regime’s appointed president, Masoud Pezeshkian.

The statement warned of heavy sentences targeting detainees from the December 2025–January 2026 nationwide uprisings. Alongside dozens already executed in connection to these protests, more than 100 identified political prisoners remain on death row. Recently, 12 prisoners linked to the Isfahan’s “Alikhani Square” case received multiple death sentences. Alireza Sepahi was sentenced to death four times; Abolfazl Sepahi three times; and Alireza Raeisi, Ghaem Hosseini, and Gol-Mohammad Mohammadi (an Afghan national) two times each. Seven others—Amirhossein Safari, Amirhossein Maleki, Ali Dashti, Amirhossein Ebrahimi Analoujeh, Shervin Bagherian, Erfan Esfandiari, and Abolfazl Ebrahimi—received single death sentences. The statement noted that three of these individuals were minors at the time of their arrest.

Parallel to the Tuesday campaign, a massive strike is underway in Unit 2 of Ghezel Hesar Prison. Since Monday, July 13, approximately 1,500 death-row inmates have engaged in a sit-in and hunger strike to protest the transfer of six cellmates to solitary confinement ahead of their scheduled executions. These prisoners previously held a successful seven-day strike in 2025, which temporarily forced prison authorities to halt the execution of inmates with drug-related charges.

The statement also detailed recent acts of suppression against female prisoners. On Sunday, July 12, Evin Prison guards attacked the women’s political ward, cracking down on inmates who were protesting severe overcrowding.

During the raid, prison guards transferred approximately 50 prisoners convicted of non-political and financial offenses to the upper floor of this ward, where female detainees of the recent uprising are also being held. This assault was met with strong resistance and protests by the detainees, who chanted “Death to the dictator.”

During these protests, the guards clashed with the prisoners, creating an atmosphere of intimidation and physical conflict, and transferred two of the protesting prisoners to solitary confinement. The transferred financial prisoners have also been left in disastrous conditions without access to food and water in the extreme heat.

Furthermore, the campaign reported the hanging of a 52-year-old woman in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz last week.

Placing the surge of executions within the broader political context, the prisoners wrote: “An unequal battle is underway in the prisons; the despotic regime resorts to executions to prevent popular protests and simultaneously does not retreat from foreign war to justify domestic suppression.” The members of the campaign concluded by issuing a warning about the imminent executions in Ghezel Hesar and calling on the international community to “be the voice of the prisoners sentenced to death from the Dey uprising.”
