Iran’s regime pushes millions to the brink as bread, the people’s last sustenance, becomes a luxury

In a move that strikes at the heart of every Iranian family’s dinner table, the Iranian regime has officially imposed a staggering increase in the price of bread in Tehran and other major cities. The price of Taftoon bread has skyrocketed by 52%, Lavash by 39%, and Barbari by 31%, turning the most basic food staple into an unaffordable luxury for millions.

This is not a simple economic adjustment; it is a calculated assault on a populace already crushed by hyperinflation and a desperate attempt by a bankrupt regime to plunder the people to fund its survival. By targeting the last affordable food item on their tables, the mullahs are stoking the embers of a nationwide uprising born of hunger and despair.

The devastating human cost of the regime’s policies

The impact of this decision is immediate and catastrophic. As the regime’s own media outlet Tabnak admitted on July 14, 2025, this is “a new shock to the empty tables” of workers. For countless families, meals had already been reduced to little more than bread after rice reached 3 million rials per kilogram and meat surpassed 10 million rials. Now, even that is being stripped away.

The heartbreaking reality is captured in the words of one formal worker who told the state-run ILNA news agency in July 2025, “I, a formal worker with a monthly salary of 22 million tomans, can no longer eat rice more than once or twice a week; most of our meals are bread-based, and the high price of bread makes our table smaller. This is my situation, now imagine what a day laborer or a construction worker is going through.”

The regime’s own media recognizes the danger, with Tehran News warning on July 16, 2025, that denying the poor their only daily source of food will lead to nothing but “increased psychological pressure and the spread of public discontent.”

A pattern of plunder and deception

This latest price hike is part of a cynical pattern of deception. As recently as February 2025, Heshmatollah Asgari, Tehran’s Deputy Governor for Economic Coordination, declared any reports of a bread price increase in 2024 to be “pure fiction.” This denial was a deliberate lie to forestall public anger while the regime prepared its next assault.

The regime’s plundering is two-pronged: it not only robs the people but also squeezes the bakeries. According to a report on June 3, 2025, each bakery is owed 40 to 45 million tomans by the government. At the same time, as a regime official admitted, government aid for bakers’ insurance has been cut and the price of flour has increased. The reason for this domestic economic warfare is clear: the bankrupt regime is looting the Iranian people’s pockets to fill the bottomless pit of its budget deficit, a deficit caused by funneling the nation’s wealth into warmongering, terrorism, and its nuclear and missile programs.

The inevitable uprising of the hungry

While regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei attempts to quell the inevitable public rage with executions and a climate of fear to crush protests over water and power shortages, he cannot silence the cry of hunger. The regime is creating the very conditions for its own demise. Where bread is traded for the price of a bullet, the cry of hunger will not go unanswered. This is the moment when the regime will see the shadow of the army of the hungry marching from the very bakeries it has plundered.
