Floods in Iran – Discharged dam water advancing towards Ahvaz

Reported by PMOI/MEK

Iran, April 8, 2019 – Iran regime authorities discharged water from a number of dams in Khuzestan Province, southwest Iran, leading to a new crisis for many locals downstream. Reports on Monday morning indicate floodwaters are advancing in the city of Ahvaz, the capital of this oil-rich province.

The water level of the Karun River is also increasing and resulting in the flooding of parts of villages and towns near the river. River waters are also rising around the cities of Ahvaz and Karun. The water pressure has reached 3,500 cubic meters per second and schools of these two cities have been closed for this week.

In Hamidiyeh, a town in Khuzestan Province, people launched a demonstration against measures and pressures imposed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) and the regime on locals. Reports indicate the Chamran Dam has been over-flooded and its waters are now heading towards the city of Ahvaz.

As floodgates gave in inside the town of Sheeban, floodwaters have surrounded a local railway and are gradually advancing towards people’s homes near the river banks. The Sheeban flood barrier gave in at 4 am Monday morning local time, launching a major crisis for this city as locals are reportedly desperately trying to do their best against the water.

Floodwaters are entering Ahvaz from the city’s northern gate, further reports show.

Red Crescent authorities in the city of Andimeshk, Khuzestan Province, have reportedly found the body of an unidentified man who seems to be between the age of 50 and 55. This body was found near the Karkhe Dam and it appears he is among those who drowned in Lorestan Province far north from Khuzestan and in western Iran.

Late Sunday evening a number of young men in the Kut Abdullah district of Ahvaz took the risk of walking in floodwaters to deliver food to the village of Kut Seyed Saleh that is currently surrounded by dangerous floods.

In the city of Khorramshahr, locals were seen protesting to the regime’s Red Crescent team on Saturday, demanding answers for their delay and not providing any aid to the flood-hit locals who are in desperate need.

“Have you come here to film yourselves and to take selfies? Where are your tents? … We have been flooded for 17 days… You have only come here for propaganda purposes… the people are helping us…,” the angry protesters were shouting.
