“No to execution Tuesdays” campaign calls for action against surge in capital punishment in Iran

Prisoners across Iran held the 61st week of the “No to Executions Tuesdays” across the country, with inmates holding hunger strikes in protest to executions in Iran. The campaign, which has been going on since January 2024, has gained significant momentum, with detainees organizing weekly acts of defiance against the Iranian regime’s systematic execution of political prisoners and other detainees.

In their weekly statement, marking the first week of campaign in the new Persian calendar year, the campaign “No to Execution Tuesdays” warned about “the brutal execution statistics of Iran’s execution-driven regime for the year 1403: More than 1,150 inmates sentenced to death were hanged, including 38 women. Among them were 135 Baluch citizens and 104 Kurdish citizens. In addition, five political or religious prisoners were executed, and eight prisoners were hanged in public in a medieval-style display.”

It is noteworthy that approximately 85% of the executions in 2024 took place during the presidency of Masoud Pezeshkian, who brands himself as a moderate and reformist. “This underscores the fact that different political factions within the regime show no distinction when it comes to killing and executing the Iranian people,” the prisoners wrote in their statement.

“We, the members of the ‘No to Execution Tuesdays’ campaign, stand united, in one voice and with all our strength, against the inhumane practice of capital punishment,” the prisoners declared. “We call on all parties, organizations, associations, and political, human rights, civil, labor, and justice-seeking activists who are concerned with the right to life and human rights and oppose the death penalty, to take more practical and effective measures in the new year to confront executions. We hope that 1404 will mark the end of repression and executions and the beginning of freedom for Iran.”

In tandem with the 61st week of the “No to Executions Tuesdays” campaign, families of political prisoners rally in front of Evin prison, protesting death sentences for their loved ones.

The prisoners participating in the 61st week of the “No to Executions Tuesdays” hunger strike are from Evin Prison (women’s ward, wards 4 and 8), Ghezel Hesar Prison (units 3 and 4), Karaj Central Prison, Greater Tehran Prison, Arak Prison, Khorramabad Prison, Asadabad Prison in Isfahan, Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan, Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz, Nezam Prison in Shiraz, Bam Prison, Kahnuj Prison, Mashhad Prison, Qaemshahr Prison, Lakan Prison in Rasht (men’s and women’s wards), Ardabil Prison, Tabriz Prison, Urmia Prison, Salmas Prison, Khoy Prison, Naqadeh Prison, Saqqez Prison, Baneh Prison, Marivan Prison, Kamyaran Prison, Tabas Prison, Khorin Prison in Varamin, Rudsar Prison in Gilan, Sepidar Prison in Ahvaz, Ramhormoz Prison, Talesh Prison, Adelabad Prison in Shiraz (men’s and women’s wards), Joveyn Prison, Borazjan Prison, Gonbad-e Kavus Prison, Dizel Abad Prison in Kermanshah, Chobindar Prison in Qazvin, and Miandoab Prison.
