Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, August 19, 2020—Over 91,200 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 394 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Wednesday afternoon local time, August 19. The official death count declared by the regime stands at 20,125 around a fifth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 6534 in Razavi Khorasan, 4333 in Mazandaran, 3996 in Isfahan, 3831 in Gilan, 3762 in Lorestan, 2926 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 2695 in Alborz, 2653 in East Azerbaijan, 2645 in Golestan, 2573 in Fars, 2339 in Hamedan, 2185 in Kermanshah, 1824 in Kurdistan, and 1199 in Hormozgan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

While local regime officials in most provinces are acknowledging severe shortages in hygiene products and medical supplies, and skyrocketing prices of basic necessities such as masks, regime President Hassan Rouhani once again resorted to more lies. “From the start of the Covid-19 epidemic there has been a large amount of hygiene services provided free to the people. Compare it to other countries where they receive so much cash from the people to confront the novel coronavirus,” he said on Wednesday.

Alireza Zali, the head of Tehran Coronavirus Task Force, said, “Some of the restrictions must continue through fall. The physical presence of students in schools might be limited. Tehran has a population of nearly 14.8 million people. This population density sets it apart from other provinces. For instance, in the Baharestan district, southeast Tehran, the density of the population is so high that it can cause challenges to our health and treatment system. The highest number of slumdwellers is in Tehran province, which further manifested itself during the coronavirus pandemic. Every day, one million people enter Tehran from neighboring provinces and leave the city at the end of the day. This population can impose further disease pressure on the health system. About 40 percent of foreign nationals live in Tehran, and 50 percent of them are illegally living in Tehran. They’re not inclined to go to treatment centers if they contract the virus. Garbage collectors, labor children, addicts and other parameters are increasing the danger in Tehran. We have a dangerous autumn ahead of us. This fall will be the hardest in Iran’s contemporary history.” (Source: Hamshahri, August 19)

Meanwhile, the regime proceeded with holding university entrance exams. The exams will continue for four days. Eyewitnesses say that that contrary to its promises and previous commitments, the regime did not implement the necessary hygienic protocols and physical distancing measures. The threat of the spread of the virus among participants.

Dean of the Isfahan Medical Sciences University said in the past six months 2500 people have died of Covid-19 in hospitals under this university’s supervision, and still these numbers do not take into account the cities of Kashan, Bidgol and Aran. “In the past 24 hours we have hospitalized 100 to 150 new patients in this province. The number of patients in dire conditions is increasing. For a two-week period, we had 800 to 900 patients hospitalized. However, during the past five days we have had 900 to 1000 hospitalized patients. There is a possibility of a new and intense increase in the number of patients during the month of September,” he said on Wednesday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency. “If the number of new Covid-19 cases increase with this ongoing trend, we will have a higher number of patients hospitalized and deaths. What is concerning all of us is that the medical staff is extremely fatigued. Bad things are happening. Physicians have not been paid in 14 months and other personnel in seven months… We have analyzed the dossiers of more than 1000 deaths and the main problem, other than fatigue, is that we lose our focus in managing the virus. The pressure must not lead to a point that our medical teams suffer more than this,” he warned.

“Other than one city, all the cities of Mazandaran province (northern Iran) are considered red zones. The cities of Ramsar, Amol, Sari and Qaemshahr have more concerning conditions,” said the spokesperson of the regime’s Health Ministry on Wednesday, according to the regime’s officials IRNA news agency.

“In the past 24 hours ten Covid-19 patients have lost their lives and 92 patients in dire conditions are in ICUs,” said the dean of Alborz Medical Sciences University on Wednesday, according to ISNA.
