Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, May 26, 2021—Over 298,800 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 543 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Wednesday afternoon local time, May 26. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 79,219, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 69,816 in Tehran, 19,885 in Isfahan, 18,634 in Khuzestan, 18,195 in Razavi Khorasan, 12,248 in East Azerbaijan, 12,050 in Lorestan, 12,030 in Mazandaran, 11,213 in West Azerbaijan, 9887 in Fars, 7265 in Golestan, 6856 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 6693 in Kerman, 6623 in Hamedan, 6223 in Markazi (Central), 3750 in Ardabil, 3580 in Hormozgan, 3444 in Qazvin, 3146 in Ilam, 3109 in Bushehr, and 2339 in Kohgiluyeh & Boyer Ahmad. “We are concerned of future and dangerous peaks with the mutated Indian and South African variants. In the current circumstances of this pandemic nearly 30 percent of the hospitalized patients are heading to ICUs,” said Health Minister Saied Namaki on Wednesday during a visit to Ilam province in western Iran, according to the Tasnim news agency, an outlet linked to the regime’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Quds Force.

“If the Brazilian variant finds its way into Iran it will not necessarily mean an individual has come from Brazil. It could mean this mutation took place inside Iran and it may be the same type as those seen in Brazil,” said Alireza Raisi, spokesperson of the regime’s National Covid-19 Task Force on Wednesday, according to the state-run Aria news agency.

“In the past four days the illness has further spread across the country. The number of cases identified during this period has reached 48 percent and the borderline of 12,000 cases. As a result, the number of coronavirus patients being hospitalized has increased by 45 percent, reaching 1713. Don’t be surprised to see an extremely dangerous fifth peak even before the fourth peak comes to an end,” according to a Wednesday report wired by the Tasnim news agency.

“The cycle must be complete in the vaccination production process. If a device is turned off as a result of a blackout, that production is of no use and the process must be restarted from the beginning. There could be millions of dollars in damage,” said a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Wednesday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency. There have been many blackouts across Iran recently.

“The status quo in Tehran is fragile. Of course, all of Iran is in such circumstances but we need to remain vigilant. From the beginning of last week, the number of people being hospitalized for coronavirus has increased significantly,” said the chair of Tehran City Council’s Health Committee on Wednesday. “A look at the statistics shows that Tehran is in poor conditions and the capital needs to remain registered as a red zone. Most of the Covid-19 patients in the fourth peak were members of the same families and maybe ten to 12 people from one family would contract the virus at the same time. There is a possibility that we could enter a fifth peak and it is not unlikely,” this official added, according to the IRGC-linked Fars news agency.

“Currently we have 400 to 500 new positive cases per day. Three days ago, we had a new record of 700 new cases, meaning there are even more that have not been identified. Of the eight cities registered as red zones across the country five are in Hormozgan province and three are in our neighboring provinces. In Hormozgan and Sistan & Baluchistan provinces there is a new rise in coronavirus numbers. Similar conditions are seen in Bushehr province,” said the dean of Hormozgan Medical Sciences University on Wednesday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“During the past 24 hours yet again, we have registered more than 500 new cases and the number of people hospitalized for coronavirus in the cities of Urmia and Khoy has increased once more,” said the dean of West Azerbaijan Medical Sciences University on Wednesday, according to the Tasnim news agency.
