Iran coronavirus update: Over 291,100 deaths, more warnings of Indian variants spreading

Iran, May 17, 2021—Over 291,100 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 541 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Monday afternoon local time, May 17. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 77,222, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 67,721 in Tehran, 19,285 in Isfahna, 18,029 in Khuzestan, 17,810 in Razavi Khorsan, 11,898 in East Azerbaijan, 11,830 in Mazandaran, 10,868 in West Azerbaijan, 9497 in Fars, 8003 in Alborz, 7110 in Golestan, 6513 in Hamedan, 6063 in Markazi (Central), 5012 in Kurdistan, 3690 in Ardabil, 3384 in Qazvin, 3200 in Zanjan, 3096 in Ilam, 3039 in Bushehr, and 2280 in Kohgiluyeh & Boyer Ahmad. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

“The UK variant created many problems for us from the West. The Indian variant from the south, southeast and east,” said Health Minister Saied Namaki on Monday. “We need to be careful of the Indian variant that has entered the country,” he added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“For two days now the vaccine storage in Khuzestan province has been completed depleted,” said the dean of Ahvaz Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the state-run ROKNA news agency.

“In the past 24 hours we have hospitalized 242 coronavirus patients. However, during this same period we have released 231 patients and 28 patients have lost their lives to Covid-19,” said the spokesperson of Isfahan Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“During the past 24 hours 27 coronavirus patients have lost their lives. Currently we have 1669 coronavirus patients hospitalized, of which 271 are in ICUs,” said the director of public relations in Shiraz Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“112 coronavirus patients in dire conditions have been transferred to hospitals in the past 24 hours and 12 have lost their lives. Currently we have 859 coronavirus patients hospitalized,” said the dean of Alborz Medical Sciences University on Monday.

“The number of positive UK variant cases are increasing in [Sistan & Baluchistan] province, consisting of 80 percent of the cases across this province,” said the dean of Zahedan Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the regime's official IRNA news agency.

“87 coronavirus patients are in ICUs in this province. During the past 24 hours 66 patients with Covid-19 symptoms were provided medical treatment, of which 58 were hospitalized,” said the dean of Qom Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the regime's official IRNA news agency.
