Iran coronavirus update: Over 275,800 deaths, many provinces reporting alarming numbers

Iran, May 3, 2021—Over 275,800 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 541 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Monday afternoon local time, May 2. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 72,875, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 63,471 in Tehran, 18,090 in Isfahan, 17,150 in Razavi Khorasan, 16,859 in Khuzestan, 11,453 in Lorestan, 11,450 in Mazandaran, 11,283 in East Azerbaijan, 10,268 in West Azerbaijan, 9576 in Gilan, 8567 in Fars, 7283 in Alborz, 6231 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 6228 in Hamedan, 6219 in Kerman, 4855 in Semnan, 4772 in Kurdistan, 3487 in Ardabil, 3209 in Qazvin, 3200 in Hormozgan, 2869 in Bushehr, and 2255 in Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

“If the vaccine brand is American and produced in another country, we will be permitting the purchase of this vaccine. For example, the private sector can import the American ‘Moderna’ vaccine from Germany or the Netherlands. Only vaccines produced in the U.S. and UK are banned,” said Alireza Raisi, spokesperson of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Monday, according to the stater-run Entekhab daily.

“In the past 24 hours 1342 new coronavirus cases were confirmed and 323 patients were hospitalized. Currently we have a total of 2264 coronavirus patients hospitalized, of which 390 are in ICUs. We have lost 32 patients to Covid-19 in Isfahan,” said the spokesperson of Isfahan Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“During the past 24 hours we have lost 30 coronavirus patients and currently the death toll stands at 4097 in Fars province,” said the director of public relations in Shiraz Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency. “Currently we have 2053 coronavirus patients hospitalized across the province, of which 321 are in ICUs,” this official added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“1285 individuals are hospitalized for coronavirus, of which 256 are in ICUs and 66 are under ventilators. During the past 24 hours we have lost 22 patients to coronavirus and the death toll stands at 4223,” said the dean of West Azerbaijan Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the Mehr news agency.

“During the first few days after March 21 we had two or three deaths per day. Currently this figure has reached 17 to 19. At that time, we around ten percent of our tests were positive. That figure now stands at 30 to 35 percent,” said the director of the East Azerbaijan Health Center on Monday, according to the Mehr news agency.

On Monday, head of the Ardabil Medical Sciences University reported 13 coronavirus deaths in the past 24 hours. “76 people are in ICUs in hospitals across [Ardabil] province and are in critical conditions. During the past few weeks, the spread of this virus has reached inside people’s homes, leaving all members of families having contracted the virus,” this official added, according to the Mehr news agency.

“Today the number of patients hospitalized for coronavirus stands at 528, of which 108 are in dire conditions and placed in ICUs,” said the deputy dean of Yazd Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the Mehr news agency.
