“In the next few weeks, omicron will find its place in our cities and replace the delta variant as the main source of coronavirus. The latest numbers stand at around 244 reported confirmed cases identified. However, the numbers will logically be much, much higher. When we say we have 244 positive samples confirmed across the country, most naturally the numbers are much higher. In the coming weeks we will most likely the spread of this variant at a much faster pace,” said a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Monday in an interview with state TV.

“The capital’s status may change in the coming days,” said Alireza Zali, head of the Tehran Covid-19 Task Force on Tuesday. “Currently we cannot say with certainty, but it is very likely that Iran will follow the same example of other countries,” he added, according to the state-run Jomhouri Eslami daily.

“We are forecasting at least 1400 omicron cases in Khuzestan province. There are many omicron patients in Khuzestan. Therefore, Khuzestan is considered contaminated,” said the deputy dean of Ahvaz Medical Sciences University on Tuesday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“Based on stats issued by the Mazandaran and Babol Medical Sciences universities, the pace of omicron spreading in Mazandaran province has increased and during the past few days, with ten confirmed cases, the alarm bell of the sixth wave has sounded… the continuation of this trend in the coming months will most definitely lead to a possible increase in the Covid-19 death toll across this province,” according to a statement released on Tuesday by the Mazandaran Covid-19 Task Force.
