Iran coronavirus update: Over 494,700 deaths, foreign vaccines banned as omicron spreads

Over 494,700 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Monday afternoon local time, January 3. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 131,702, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 115,660 in Tehran, 39,915 in Razavi Khorasan, 34,245 in Isfahan, 18,653 in West Azerbaijan, 17,975 in Mazandaran, 13,655 in Sistan 7 Baluchistan, 13,310 in Qom, 8157 in Kurdistan, and 6290 in Ardabil. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Monday as 22 deaths and 1677 new cases. Furthermore, 2624 patients are in ICUs and 334 of the new cases have been hospitalized.

While omicron has spread across the country, the mullahs’ regime ruling Iran is continuing its plundering and criminal policies by, again, banning the import of foreign vaccines. “We no longer have any vaccines imported from abroad. Vaccine imports have been banned because indigenous vaccines will provide for our needs,” said Bahram Daraie, head of the mullahs’ Food and Drug Organization on Sunday, according to the regime’s official IRIB news agency.

“Omicron is the [variant] that is spreading among adults and children. The number of omicron cases is higher than the official stats, and the Health Ministry’s figures are the tip of the iceberg. Although it is too late to impose quarantine measures and shut down the country, it is necessary for serious measures to be taken from this day forward. Otherwise, the sixth peak will begin and render a storm of illnesses. This time around we will not be able to exit the coronavirus swamp easily,” said a health expert on Monday in an interview with the state-run Hamdeli daily.

“On the issue of omicron, the number of cases confirmed by the kits have increased. To this day we have had 194 confirmed cases of omicron and this number is escalating,” said Deputy Health Minister Saied Karimi on Tuesday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The first case of omicron has been identified. When one case is identified it means there are 100 cases, and in the coming days we will have an omicron eruption. Omicron has spread across all of [Khuzestan] province,” said the caretaker dean of Ahvaz Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“Omicron is spreading fast and several people have contracted this variant in the past few days. Omicron did not just remain in the city of Babol and has spread in some other cities,” said the deputy dean of Mazandaran Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the regime’s official IRNA news agency.
