Iran coronavirus update: Over 491,700 deaths, expert warns of growing number of deaths

Over 491,700 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Friday afternoon local time, December 24. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 131,306, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 115,080 in Tehran, 39,745 in Razavi Khorasan, 33,900 in Isfahan, 29,745 in Khuzestan, 16,973 in East Azerbaijan, 14,388 in Alborz, 13,217 in Kerman, 9179 in Kermanshah, 9118 in Hamedan, 4685 in Zanjan, and 3709 in Kohgiluyeh & Boyer Ahmad. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Friday as 44 deaths and 1967 new cases. Furthermore, 2796 patients are in ICUs and 321 of the new cases have been hospitalized.

“The threat of omicron spreading exponentially and in an explosive manner is very real. Omicron has entered the country and we need to take it extremely seriously due to its characteristics. The spread of omicron is faster than the delta variant,” said Alireza Naji, a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Friday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“[Omicron] had entered the country much earlier… it appears that controlling the borders will no longer be helpful. This illness has spread across the country. Any measures that the government can take to limit this, they should. If we can, we should delay the exams or at least hold them online. These are not issues to kid around with. If we don’t urgently limit some of our activities right now, we may witness the deaths of tens of thousands of others, as we did during the fifth wave,” said an epidemiologist expert in Tehran Medical Sciences University on Friday in an interview with state TV.

“People who contract coronavirus refer to hospitals with much delay, and nearly half of the deaths are registered in the first 24 hours of their hospitalization. Of course, it is possible that there are errors in our health care system,” said the deputy dean of Tabriz Medical Sciences University on Friday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency, regarding the death toll of East Azerbaijan province being higher than the national average.

“With 130 [coronavirus] patients being hospitalized in the past 24 hours, the total number of patients hospitalized stands at 621, of which 98 are in ICUs,” according to a statement released on Friday by the Shiraz Medical Sciences University.

“During the past 24 hours 114 people have contracted coronavirus. We currently have 424 patients hospitalized, of which 134 are in ICU and 26 are under ventilators,” according to a statement released on Friday by the West Azerbaijan Medical Sciences University.
