Iran coronavirus update: Over 490,800 deaths, official says omicron behind new rise in stats

Over 490,800 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Tuesday afternoon local time, December 21. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 131,167, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 114,890 in Tehran, 33,815 in Isfahan, 18,488 in West Azerbaijan, 18470 in Fars, 17,045 in Gilan, 13575 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 10,695 in Golestan, 9159 in Kermanshah, 6480 in Semnan, 6268 in North Khorasan, 5469 in Bushehr, 4316 in South Khorasan, and 3790 in Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Tuesday as 43 deaths and 2413 new cases. Furthermore, 2835 patients are in ICUs and 376 of the new cases have been hospitalized.

“The increasing number of coronavirus cases is nothing but omicron. Anyone who contracts Covid should know they have omicron,” said Masoud Mardani, a senior member of the National Covid-19 Task Force, according to the state-run Hamshahri daily on Tuesday.

“When the country’s coronavirus map becomes red, then there is nothing that can be done and we will face many people being hospitalized and placed in ICUs, and a high number of deaths. Now is the time to take preventive action,” said Shamsi Gushaki, a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Tuesday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The delta variant spread across Iran two weeks after Europe. The same trend will take place regarding omicron,” said Alireza Zali, head of the Tehran Covid-19 Task Force on Tuesday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

From the beginning of this pandemic 17,217 coronavirus patients have lost their lives in hospitals covered by the Isfahan Medical Sciences University, aside from the cities of Kashan and Aran & Bidgol, according to a statement released on Tuesday by the Isfahan Medical Sciences University. If we associate this ratio of victims to the entire country, the number of coronavirus victims stands at around 315,000, meaning around 2.5 times the official stats issued by the regime’s Health Ministry. It is worth noting that many of the victims are not registered in hospitals under the umbrella of Medical Sciences universities, and health and hygiene conditions in many provinces are far worse than those in Isfahan.

In Fars province, two weeks after the number of coronavirus patients being hospitalized each day reached double digits, in the past 24 hours 124 coronavirus patients were hospitalized, according to a report wired on Tuesday by ISNA.

“Considering the fact that the first omicron case has been identified in the country, the alarm bell of facing a new coronavirus has gone off,” said an advisor to the caretaker dean of Shiraz Medical Sciences University on Tuesday, according to the regime’s official IRIB news agency.
