The implications of House Res. 374 for Iran

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, June 18, 2020—The majority of the members of the United States House of Representatives backed on Wednesday, June 17, a resolution in support of the Iranian Resistance and condemning the terrorist activities of the Iranian regime.

A bipartisan group of 220 U.S. lawmakers submitted to the Committee on Foreign Affairs the H. RES. 374 condemning mullahs’ regime’s terrorism and repression against the Iranian people. The lawmakers also voiced their support for the 10-point plan of the President-elect of the National Council of the Resistance of Iran (NCRI) Mrs. Maryam Rajavi to establish a democratic, secular and non-nuclear republic.

The H. RES. 374 specifies that the Iranian people “have been deprived of their fundamental freedoms for which reason they rejected monarchic dictatorship and are opposing religious tyranny.” The Resolution also emphasized that the congress “stands with the people of Iran who are continuing to hold legitimate and peaceful protests against an oppressive and corrupt regime.”

Referring to regime’s terrorist activities against the Iranian opposition and the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) the resolution also “condemned past and present Iranian state-sponsored terrorist attacks against United States citizens and officials, as well as Iranian dissidents, including the Iranian regime’s terror plot against the “Free Iran 2018 – the Alternative” gathering in Paris and called on relevant United States Government agencies to work with European allies, including those in the Balkans, where Iran has expanded its presence, to hold Iran accountable for breaching diplomatic privileges, and to call on nations to prevent the malign activities of the Iranian regime’s diplomatic missions, with the goal of closing them down, including the Iranian embassy in Albania.

The H. RES. 374 resolution expressed support for the Iranian people’s desire for a democratic, secular, and non-nuclear republic of Iran which shows the support of the congress for the overthrowing of the mullahs’ regime and establishment of democracy.

“It was encouraging to see that this resolution sponsored by a House Majority has also addressed the terror plot in the U.S. against our movement. But we should not rest until the entire terror and spying network of the Iranian regime is dismantled,” Alireza Jafarzadeh, deputy director of the Washington office of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, told Fox News.

“The fact that out of ten diplomats or agents of the Iranian regime expelled or jailed in Europe and the U.S. for terror plots over the past two years, eight of them were tied to operations against our movement, is a vivid testimony that the NCRI is the alternative to this regime,” Jafarzadeh added.

What adds to the importance of this resolution is the political and international situation in which it has been issued. The Iranian regime faces domestic crises on the economic and social front, has disastrously mishandled the coronavirus outbreak, and its regional strategic policies have collapsed since the peoples of Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon have taken to the streets to put an end to the regime's interference in the affairs of their countries. Also, internationally, the recent report of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN’s nuclear watchdog,  shed light on the regime’s violation of UN Security Council resolutions and the 2015 nuclear accord, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). In short, this is not the best of times for the mullahs’ regime.

The signatories of the resolution included 102 chairs of the committees and sub-committees and ranking members such as  Congressman Greg Pence (R-IN) from the Committee of Foreign Affairs, Congresswoman Liz Cheney, the House Republican Conference Chair, and former Congressman John Ratcliffe, who is now the Director of National Intelligence in the Trump administration.

The resolution has the support of important socio-political groups in American society which is a sign of the despise for the clerical regime on one hand and the credibility and legitimacy of the Iranian resistance as a political alternative to the declining clerical regime on the other. Interestingly, the resolution has also garnered the support of churches and Christian leaders with more than 500 letters, and the support of citizens and former representatives who have submitted 35,000 emails since the registration of this resolution.

Message Maryam Rajavi to a virtual conference announcing the support of the majority of U.S. Congress for Resolution 374 to stand with the people of Iran for freedom - June 27, 2020

Maryam Rajavi addresses conference announcing the support of the majority of U.S. House representatives for Resolution 374 to stand with the people of Iran for freedom – June 27, 2020

Speaking to the online conference in which the resolution was presented, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi said:

“After more than 40 years of carnage, suppression, poverty, and terrorism under the mullahs’ rule, it is truly admirable that the elected representatives of the people of America are standing with the people of Iran and their struggle for a free Iran, and it reflects the solidarity of American people with the people of Iran. I am delighted that a majority of lawmakers have condemned the terrorist activities of the mullahs’ regime through its so-called diplomatic missions and terrorist-diplomats. The Iranian Resistance commends the call to hold the mullahs accountable and to adopt decisive measures, such as the closure of the regime’s centers of espionage and terror in Europe, including in Albania. The Iranian Resistance has always persisted on the need to re-impose the six UN Security Council resolutions and the international arms embargo against the clerical regime in Iran.”

As the world rallies to stand with the people of Iran against the tyrannical rule of the mullahs, the regime in Iran finds it harder and harder to maintain its façade of legitimacy. In this regard, every act of solidarity will be a message of hope to the brave protesters in Iran who are risking their lives to bring freedom and democracy in their country.
