Iran: IRGC Basij centers targeted across the country

Iran, December 16, 2020—Rebellious youth in different Iranian cities have been targeting the Iranian regime’s suppressive centers , including several Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) centers and branches of the judiciary, which has become much hated for executing political prisoners and giving heavy prison sentences to protesters.

Five IRGC bases and Basij headquarters were set ablaze in major cities such as Isfahan, Hamedan, Lahijan, and Nishabur in recent days. The Basij are the most hated suppressive paramilitary force inside Iran. Its main role is to preserve the mullahs’ rule through repressive measures against protests and demonstrations. The Basij played a prominent role in quelling the November 2019 protests and are part of the regime’s new plan to increase repressive measures on the anniversary of the uprising.

In Gachsaran, the brave youths set fire to a judiciary branch in response to suppressive measures taken against political prisoners. In recent months, following the execution of 27-year-old wrestling champion, Navid Afkari and more death sentences issued for other political prisoners, Iranian youth have been frequently targeting the regime’s suppressive centers and judiciary offices in various cities.

Also, in Qom, the defiant youth targeted a center focused on promoting the mullahs’ fundamentalist ideology. The regime uses these widely hated sites to spread propaganda and boost suppressive measures against the population.

Meanwhile, in Shiraz and Neyshabur, the rebellious youths torched a banner of the Iranian regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) and the images and posters of the regime’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei to show their rejection of the regime in its entirety. The MOIS carries out propaganda, espionage, and terror operations against protesters, dissidents, intellectuals, and members and supporters of the opposition inside Iran and abroad.

These events portray the explosive state of the Iranian society which was described by the regime officials and state-run media as “Nitrate of Dissent.”

The devaluation of the country's currency, skyrocketing prices, low incomes, a broken economy, an escalation Covid-19 crisis, and the regime’s mismanagement and corruption have caused outrage across the Iranian society. Testament to this reality is faced five major uprisings in Iran since 2018.

Most notable among them is the November 2019 uprising, in which crowds took to the streets in more than 190 cities and called for an end to the 40-year rule of the clerical regime. The November 2019 protests are described as the most important political unrest since the 1979 anti-monarchic revolution Security forces responded by opening fire on unarmed protesters and killing at least 1500 people.

On repeated occasions, many officials acknowledged the role of the Iranian opposition movement the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) in leading and organizing protests across the country.

In recent years, the MEK’s network inside Iran, known as the Iranian Resistance Units, has gained a lot of support from all segments of the Iranian society. In the last two years, the Resistance Units have expanded and increased their activities across the country.

In recent days, in addition to Tehran, the Resistance Units organized anti-regime activities in Isfahan, Shiraz, Gorgan, Mashhad, Kerman, Hamadan, and Fuman. They took to graffiti and installed handwritten anti-regime slogans on the walls reading in part “Down with Khamenei, hail to freedom,” and “Down with the dictator.”

In Tehran and Isfahan, the Resistance Units installed huge posters and images of Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), and Iranian Resistance leader Massoud Rajavi, echoing the slogans “We must rise to take back our legitimate rights” and “Rise up to overthrow the regime of the Supreme Leader.”
