Iranian education workers protest in support of detained activist

Reported by PMOI/MEK

Iran, July 29, 2019 – On Saturday, July 27, groups of education workers held protests in Fars, Bushehr and Shiraz provinces, expressing their support of Mohammad Ali Zahmatkash, the detained teacher activist in the Adel Abad prison in Shiraz.

Mohammad Ali Zahmatkesh was arrested on May 7.

Teachers and education workers are one of the many segments of Iranian society who have been suffering from the regime's destructive policies. In the past year, Iranian teachers have been regularly protesting the government's lack of response to their demands and crackdown on activists. Teachers held nationwide strikes on several accounts in protest to their poor working conditions and insufficient salaries. In some areas of the country, teachers lack proper contracts and job security.

Retired teachers, whose only source of income is their pension funds, also face harsh conditions as the government refuses to adjust their salaries with the inflation rate. This too has led to various protests in front of the regime’s Majlis (parliament) and different state institutions.

The regime has yet to respond to the demands of education workers. On several occasions, security forces have cracked down on protesters, beating them and taking them to prison.
