Iran: Workers, employees holding protests for legitimate demands

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, September 9, 2020—On Tuesday, September 8, various workers of the Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company continued their protest rally in front of the governorate in the city of Shush in Khuzestan province, southwest Iran. Haft Tappeh’s fired workers are demanding changes to their temporary contract and returning to work.

It is worth noting that the protesters have been planting nearly 1,000 hectares of sugar beet on Haft Tappeh’s sugarcane fields for the past five years. However, they have been fired for several months now under various pretexts.

“While we had been promised that the situation would change, instead of signing a contract all of us were fired in a strange move after harvesting the sugar beet,” one protesting worker said.

On Monday, September 7, a group of firefighters in the city of Isfahan, central Iran, held a protest rally demanding their delayed paychecks and answers to other outstanding issues. It is worth noting that these firefighters had once before gathered in front of the Isfahan Fire Department’s building on July 13 raising similar demands.

On September 7, municipal workers of Mahshahr, a city in southeast Iran, held a rally for the second straight day protesting local officials’ refusal to deliver on their paychecks. These workers are demanding the implementation of job classification and bonus laws, issued by the regime’s Labor Department.

This gathering lasted until midday under the scorching summer heat.

“We are living very difficult lives financially. We are demanding our legitimate rights,” the protesting workers said. “We will continue protesting until all of our demands are fully met,” one protesting worker added.

Employees of the Kerman Regional Electric Company held a protesting rally on Monday, September 7.

Due to the coronavirus lockdown since March, these individuals have not received their unemployment insurance and the company management intends to dismiss them from work.

“We are like beggars sitting on a mountain of gold,” one protesting worker said.

Railway workers of the RSTC Company in Andimeshk, southwest Iran, continued their strike on Tuesday, September 8, for the third consecutive day, seeking answers to their demands including delayed paychecks and harsh working conditions.

The protesting workers have not been paid for three months. Additionally, these workers have not been provided with proper work suits since last year.

“RSTC officials said if anyone is unhappy about the situation, they can quit and then we will pay all his demands,” the protesting workers said.
