Iran: Arrestees of Nov 2019 uprising transferred by force in Tehran prison

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, October 1, 2020—According to reports, on September 30, prison guards of the Greater Tehran Penitentiary forcibly relocated political prisoners arrested during the November 2019 uprising in Hall Two of the facility’s Unit Five section. The mullahs’ regime killed at least 1,500 protesters, wounded more than 8,000 and arrested at least 12,000.

On Wednesday, Azvaji, head of the prison’s Unit Five, went to Hall Two of Unit Five and informed the political prisoners that they will be transferred to Unit Two to separate them based on their crime classification.

The political prisoners objected the relocation plans because they had been able to provide some accessories for the hall (Hall Two of Unit Five) at their own expense.

The prisoners had to leave the hall and its accessories against their will, and transfer to Unit Two, which has very poor facilities.

“We have suffered a lot. We had cleaned the [previous] hall and made it habitable. Now, why should we move, especially with the Covid-19 conditions? From day one this hall was for political prisoners, and you brought ordinary prisoners to this ward. Why was this not observed from the beginning?” the political prisoners told prison officials.

"If the principle to separate prisoners based on their of crimes is to be enforced, then why did you bring at least eight major drug dealers to the prison to make drug addicts out of the prisoners?” the prisoners asked.

Azvaji threatened to forcibly relocate them the prisoners.

An hour later, prison officials told Mohammad Habibi, an imprisoned teacher, to inform the other detainees to prepare for their transfer.

After that, prison guards attacked the hall and relocated the prisoners by force to Unit Two.

These transfers take place at a time when there are coronavirus-affected prisoners in other units of the prison and it is highly possible for the virus to spread due to these recent prisoner transfers.

Mohammad Habibi, Shapoor Ehsanirad, and the November 2019 protesters are among the political prisoners in Hall two of Unit Five of the Greater Tehran Penitentiary.

The crackdown on the inmates of Greater Tehran Penitentiary comes against the backdrop of increased repressive measures against political prisoners across Iran. Very recently, the regime executed two political prisoners on charges of taking part in nationwide protests. One of them, Navid Afkari, was brutally tortured and forced to confess to crimes he had not committed. His execution was carried out without prior notice to his lawyer and family and despite an international campaign for sentence to be revoked. He was later buried under severe restrictions to prevent further protests.

The other political prisoners, arrested during the November 2019 protests, are under the threat of being executed. The regime’s judiciary has upheld their death sentences and they have been recently threatened that their execution will be carried out if they do not cooperate with the regime. Naser Moradi, the father of one of the prisoners, committed suicide last week because of the pressure imposed by regime officials.

International human rights bodies and activists have warned against the mounting pressure on political prisoners in Iran. The regime, which is in constant fear of the reemergence of nationwide protests, is trying to cause intimidation and fear among the population through the persecution of arrested protesters.
