Iran, April 17, 2021—Iranian regime supreme leader Ali Khamenei is disappointed with the process of the new round of nuclear talks that started on April 6 in Vienna.
While Khamenei announced to continue negotiations, he expressed his displeasure about the outcome.
“When the Americans continuously speak of their willingness to negotiate directly with Iran, they do not intend to negotiate in order to accept the truth. Rather, their purpose in negotiating is to impose their false claims,” Khamenei said during a so-called Qur’anic Recitation Ceremony on April 14.
“First the sanctions must be removed, then Iran will carry out its commitments in the JCPOA,” Khamenei said.
“The Americans try to impose their will and have an arrogant and humiliating attitude,” Khamenei continued.
These remarks show that despite its defiant rhetoric, the regime is in desperate need for sanctions relief.
Former IRGC Commander and Secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council Mohsen Rezai acknowledged that despite the regime’s tactics of showing strength it suffers from “security pollution.”
“The country is confronted with widespread security pollution. We had two explosions in our nuclear facilities and an assassination,” Rezai said on April 14, referring to the recent explosions at the Natanz nuclear facility and the death of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, a top Revolutionary Guards general and one of the key officials behind the regime’s nuclear weapons program.
The state-run daily Jahene Sanat warned about a security gap on April 15. “A few months after the assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, a sabotage attack in Natanz nuclear facility has again raised questions on the issue of security defense of the country,” Jahane Sanat wrote.
In such circumstances, while the regime is grappling with countless economic, social, and economic crises, it needs desperate sanctions relief. But at the same time, it can’t afford to back down on any of its illicit behaviors because it trigger an implosion within its own ranks and pave the way for widespread nationwide protests by a population that has barely been kept in check by an extremely violent security apparatus.
Meanwhile, the continuation and expansion of social protests and challenges posed by the upcoming presidential elections have only added to the regime’s concerns.
But whether the regime accepts the western countries conditions or not, the main problem remains that it is incapable to answer the demands of the Iranian people, who are chanting in the streets “We will die but we will not back down from our rights,” “Our enemy is here, they are lying that it’s the U.S,” and “Officials get astronomical salaries, the general public lives in misery.”
