Iran, July 19, 2020—Over 73,200 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 346 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Sunday afternoon local time, July 19. The official death count declared by the regime stands at 14,188 around a fifth of the actual figure.
The death toll in various provinces include: 18,200 in Tehran, 3,320 in Gilan, 3,220 in Mazandaran, 2,135 in East Azerbaijan, 1,885 in Golestan, 775 in Bushehr, and 770 in Markazi (Central). This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.
The spokesperson of the regime’s Health Ministry said on Sunday that 209 people had died of the novel coronavirus during the past 24-hour period and 3,556 patients are in ICU. These are the highest official numbers since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. “The provinces of East Azerbaijan, Ilam, Bushehr, Razavi Khorasan, Khuzestan, Zanjan, Golestan, Mazandaran, Kerman and Fars are in code red conditions,” she added.

While Iranian regime President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday that 25 million Iranians have contracted coronavirus and 30 to 35 million are in danger of being infected, various regime officials are desperately attempting to downplay his remarks.
“The theory of herd immunity is discussed all across the globe but is not effective because we cannot let the people of a society on their own for all of them to contract the virus. Therefore, this method cannot be a strategy,” said Mostafa Ghanei, head of the Covid-19 Task Force Scientific Committee. “During the past two weeks the number of young individuals contracting the virus and those in dire conditions have been higher than ever before. This itself has caused concerns.”
“The objective of those of us involved in the field of medical treatment is to buy time to find a cure and solution. Through buying time hospitals can provide better medical services to the more dire patients,” said Babak Eshrati, deputy dean of Iran Medical Sciences University, on Sunday, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet affiliated directly to the regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).
In Tehran, Nahid Khodakarami, a member of the City Council said on Sunday that their investigations “show the virus’ death rate has been 14.9 percent among those hospitalized.”
“We have not been able to control the virus anywhere in Tehran, nor across the country as other governments have been able to. We had nine deaths in Tehran back in early May. However, 101 deaths were registered in Tehran yesterday and this shows the number of people contracting the virus is on the rise,” she added, according to the Tasnim news agency, an outlet affiliated directly to the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Quds Force.
“From the beginning of this virus to this day, they have not provided even a single mask to drug stores at designated prices through government channels for us to provide to the people… The government designated price of each mask was announced at 8,000 rials. The Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade claims they are providing ten million masks. However, the truth is that not even one mask has been delivered to drug stores at designated prices,” said the deputy chair of the Tehran Province Pharmaceuticals Association on Sunday, according to the Mehr news agency.
“We are facing a major escalation in the number of people seeking medical treatment in hospitals and those hospitalized,” said head of the Alborz Medical Sciences University on Sunday. “Last night 815 people who had Covid-19 symptoms sought treatment in medical centers. This is a high number. Currently we have 615 hospitalized patients and if we surpass the 1,000 mark, we will be facing a very difficult situation. The medical staff is very tired, and they have been constantly engaged with this virus since late February. Our branches have been full of Covid-19 patients ever since,” he added, according to the regime’s official IRNA news agency.
“Some Covid-19 patients lose their lives the moment they reach the emergency section. An average of three to six people have lost their lives on a daily basis,” said the caretaker of North Khorasan Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the Mehr news agency.

“On Saturday we broke the record of the number of hospitalized Covid-19 patients in hospitals of this region. This shows the situation remains very dire,” said deputy governor of Razavi Khorasan Province on Sunday, according to the IRNA news agency.
“Today we witnessed a new record in the number of Covid-19 deaths and hospitalized patients in Ardabil province. This indicates the status quo is very poor,” said the dean of Ardabil Medical Sciences University.
“The total number of Covid-19 cases in this province in June alone has been twice the number of the previous four months… To this day 991 members of our medical staff, administrative and other provincial employees have contracted the virus,” said the head of Ilam Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the state-run Asre Iran daily.
