Iran coronavirus update: Over 433,700 deaths, Health Minister calls situation a “catastrophe”

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, September 21, 2021—Over 433,700 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Tuesday afternoon local time, September 21. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 117,905 around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 101,826 in Tehran, 35,375 in Razavi Khorasan, 28,760 in Isfahan, 26,566 in Khuzestan, 15,554 in Fars, 15,378 in West Azerbaijan, 15,120 in Gilan, 14,625 in Lorestan,  12,708 in Alborz, 12,405 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 11,462 in Kerman, 8188 in Hamedan, 7674 in Kermanshah, 6797 in Kurdistan, 5614 in North Khorasan, 4924 in Bushehr, and 3806 in South Khorasan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Tuesday as 379 deaths and 17,564 new cases, of which 2581 were hospitalized. Furthermore, 6661 patients are in ICUs.

“The death rate of 600 to 700 people per day is truly a catastrophe… In some provinces the number of new cases per day is extremely high and the daily death toll is also high… this is a catastrophe,” said regime Health Minister Bahram Einollahi on Tuesday. “I have gone to nine provinces and seen all the ICUs. The status quo is extremely poor… the main issue for coronavirus patients is to be placed under medical care and provided oxygen. Most of the deaths are taking place in the afternoons and nights, meaning when the personnel are not providing adequate care… When I went to Mashhad it was truly a catastrophe. When I went to the Imam Reza Hospital more than 80 percent of the patients were under ventilators. Right now, the psychological issues caused by Covid-19 are more dire than coronavirus itself. Currently we have unfortunately lost the people’s trust. As a minister I know the people don’t trust me because there is another person saying the exact opposite of my remarks,” he added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency. “Not all issues should be made public. Whatever problem we face should be discussed in the National Covid-19 Task Force and stay here, and we’ll reach a consensus. There will never be a decision made where everyone involved agrees with the path forward. In fact, there are always those who are for and those who are against various issues. However, when we reach a result, everyone should respect that result and outside the meeting there shouldn’t be contradictory remarks. This is neither moral nor correct,” Einollahi continued.

“Following a few days of decreasing numbers of new cases and deaths, the Health Ministry’s stats indicate a new rise in the daily figures,” according to a Tuesday piece published by the state-run Hamdeli daily.

“The city of Bukan registered its highest number of patients hospitalized to this day. The numbers of new cases and those being hospitalized has increased unconventionally and unexpectedly. The current numbers are higher than last fall, and the pace and expansion of the fifth wave in Bukan is massive in comparison to previous waves. Our medical centers are overly crowded,” said the mayor of Bukan on Tuesday, according to the regime's official IRNA news agency.

According to a report wired Tuesday by the regime’s official IRNA news agency and the head of the Covid-19 Task Force in the city of Rasht in northern Iran, this city, with a population of 881,000 people, has had 4303 deaths since the beginning of this pandemic. This equals to around 0.5 percent of the city’s population. If this percentage is taken into equation for the entire country, the number of coronavirus deaths equals to over 420,000. It is worth noting, however, that people living in distant towns and villages are extremely vulnerable due to the poor medical services in such areas and thus their death tolls are far higher.

“During the past 24 hours 19 coronavirus patients have lost their lives. Currently we have 1326 coronavirus patients hospitalized and another 630 are temporarily hospitalized and receiving Remdesivir medication,” according to a statement released on Tuesday by the Kermanshah Medical Sciences University.

“We have 2996 coronavirus patients, of which 510 are in ICUs. During the past 24 hours 43 patients have lost their lives,” according to a statement released on Tuesday by the Isfahan and Kashan Medical Sciences universities.

“During the past 24 hours 29 patients have lost their lives and 559 are hospitalized,” said the spokesperson of Kerman Medical Sciences University on Tuesday, according to the Tasnim news agency, an outlet linked to the regime’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Quds Force.
