Iran coronavirus update: Over 318,000 deaths, fifth wave begins in Tehran & other major cities

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, June 26, 2021—Over 318,000 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Saturday afternoon local time, June 26. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 83,711, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 74,526 in Tehran, 21,445 in Isfahan, 20,111 in Khuzestan, 19,335 in Razavi Khorasan, 12,515 in Mazandaran, 10,657 in Fars, 7565 in Golestan, 7561 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 7228 in Kerman, 6553 in Markazi (Central), 6158 in Kermanshah, 5292 in Yazd, 4590 in Hormozgan, 3331 in Ilam, and 2926 in South Khorasan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Thursday as 123 deaths and 7034 new cases, according to the regime's official IRNA news agency. Furthermore, 3195 patients are in ICUs and 965 of the new cases have been hospitalized.

While the regime’s plundering approach regarding the price of the coronavirus vaccine has resulted in a new embarrassment, regime President Hassan Rouhani is now desperate to clean up the mess. “The price of the indigenous vaccine will be on the Health Ministry’s bill. There is no need for any bickering or disputes over the fact that a foreign vaccine maybe $10 and why are we purchasing it inside Iran for $8, or a foreign vaccine may be $3 and why are we purchasing it at $7 or $8 inside Iran. In my opinion this is all nonsense, and some people are adding fuel to the fire,” he said on Saturday.

“We are witnessing an increase in the number of new cases in the southern provinces, especially Bushehr, Hormozgan, Sistan & Baluchistan, Kerman and Yazd. Currently we have 32 red cities, 172 orange, and 242 yellow,” said Alireza Raisi, spokesperson of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Saturday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

Ahmad Mehri, an epidemiologist in Iran, said he is extremely concerned about a fifth peak with the Indian and South African variants in Iran. “It is forecasted that in the coming days various provinces, especially Tehran and the country’s northern areas, will be facing the new virus,” he said on Saturday, according to the Tasnim news agency, an outlet linked to the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Quds Force.

“The fifth wave has begun. Firuzkuh and Damavand, two neighboring cities of Tehran, are red zone areas. In the next one or two weeks we will be facing a new wave in Tehran,” said an expert at Tehran’s renowned Masih Daneshvari Hospital on Saturday. “The new virus will most likely be the Indian delta, which is very capable in spreading extremely fast. Each patient can transfer the virus to eight to twelve other people. We should not expect coronavirus to be controlled since we have not been vaccinated. The Indian variant has resulted in cities becoming red zones,” according to the state-run Aftab News website.

“The number of new cases and deaths due to coronavirus is increasing in Sistan & Baluchistan province. The status quo is extremely dangerous and for four straight days now the number of new cases has been in four digits, and all the hospitals beds are full,” according to a Saturday report wired by the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“The fifth wave has begun spreading in southern parts of Fars province and this is an alarm bell for the entire province being registered as a red zone in the coming days,” said the dean of Shiraz Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the Mehr news agency.

“The southern provinces are facing a crisis and sooner or later [Markazi] province will witness similar circumstances. It is necessary to prepare ourselves for the fifth wave. Since last week, the number of people seeking initial medical care for Covid-19 has been increasing,” said the dean of Arak Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The city of Yazd is now registered as a red zone due to the increasing number of new cases. Of the 632 cases tested across the province during the past 24 hours, 338 have been confirmed as positive,” said the spokesperson of Yazd Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.
