Iran: People literally living underground despite coronavirus crisis

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, April 22, 2020—At a time when the people of Iran like citizens of all countries are struggling to cope with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the mullahs’ regime ruling Iran is adding to the Iranian people’s miseries by not providing any meaningful support.

A recent video aired in Iran’s state TV is circulating in social media networks displays homeless people who have literally dug tunnels underground as their makeshift homes in an area very close to the Iranian capital Tehran. This has resulted in a new wave of anger among the Iranian society, especially following previous cases of homeless people living in graves, tunnels and under bridges in various cities checkered across the country.

This shocking footage was taken on March 16 and aired on April 20 by the state-run Hamshahri TV website. Despite the fact that such utter poverty and homeless people in Iran living under such dreadful conditions is nothing new under the mullahs’ regime for the past 41 years, the airing of this video continues to raise quite a stir among the Iranian society.

People living in such areas will without a doubt help the spread of the novel coronavirus further across the country.

Homeless Iranians have also resorted to sleeping — and even living — in pre-dug graves to escape freezing winter cold conditions.

“It is quite terrible for people to be homeless and even sleep in graves, and for 7,500 ‘grave sleepers’ to be rounded up in a single day,” said then deputy health Minister Mohammad Hadi Ayazi back in December 2016.

Instead of providing any kind of support for these individuals, Iranian regime officials quickly had them rounded up to keep them away from the eyes of reporters. Such measures will probably be repeated with those living in underground tunnels nowadays.

“…1.35 million drug addicts across the country and one in every four marriages are ending in divorce,” Ayazi added. It is worth noting that regime officials have a long history of downplaying such embarrassing numbers.

Disturbing reports of homeless Iranians living in such conditions come parallel to further news of corruption among regime officials, such as $4.8 billion dollars reported lost from the 2018 budget. This shocking revelation was made by an agency of the regime’s own government, indicating the true scope of this corruption in Iran remains unknown.
