Raisi’s UN speech: Covid lies, nuclear extortion, and praise for terrorism

Analysis by PMOI/MEK

Iran, September 22, 2021—Iranian regime president Ebrahim Raisi addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, and as would be expected of a serial criminal, his remarks were filled with lies and threats to global peace and security.

Raisi opened his speech by saying that as the “elected of the great people of Iran,” he wants to send a message of “rationality, justice, and freedom” to the world.

Interestingly, Raisi refrained from attending the meeting in session and sent a pre-recorded speech to the UN General Assembly. And the regime’s own media and analysts speculated because of his past record in suppressing freedoms and abusing human rights, namely his role in the massacre of more than 30,000 political prisoners in 1988, his trip to New York would have caused outrage among Iranian expats and human rights organizations, and the trip would have caused too many issues that the regime would want to avoid.

Even the mere mention of being an elected official rings hollow to the world. The so-called elections that saw Raisi’s rise as president was boycotted by more than 90 percent of the Iranian population, a fact that has been acknowledged by media and analysts across the globe. Even the regime’s own officials acknowledged that the low turnout was without precedence in the regime’s history.

In his speech, Raisi stressed the need for all parties to the nuclear negotiations to remain committed to their obligations under the terms of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and blamed the U.S. for not lifting nuclear sanctions.

Raisi made no remarks on growing concerns over the regime drive toward amassing weapons-grade uranium. As recently as two weeks ago, the International Atomic Energy Agency, UN’s nuclear watchdog, reported that the regime was stockpiling highly enriched uranium and refrains from coming clean on questions that remain about the military aspects of its nuclear program. World powers have been urging the Iranian regime to take steps to come in compliance with the JCPOA.

Instead, Raisi repeated that the only way to make the nuclear talks work is for the U.S. to lift sanctions.

Raisi went on to blame the West for hampering Iran’s coronavirus response by placing sanctions on medicine. Interestingly, Raisi made no mention of regime supreme leader Ali Khamenei’s ban on the import of vaccines from the U.S. and UK.

“From the beginning, we had decided to import vaccines from reliable international sources, but sanctions on medicine prevented the Iranian people,” Raisi said.

The U.S. has time and again stressed that it has placed no sanctions on humanitarian goods, food, agricultural products, medicine, or medical appliances.

Iran is hit by one of the worst covid pandemics in the world, with nearly 450,000 people killed since February 2020, mainly because of the regime’s criminal and destructive policies. Yet Raisi went on to call his regime “Asia’s medical pole.”

While Iran’s neighbors are constantly warning about Tehran’s terrorist meddling in their countries, Raisi describe the mullahs’ regime as “inspirational” and “security preserving.”

“The security-establishing example of the Islamic Republic is founded on regional mechanisms based on diplomacy without any external meddling. Our policy is to preserve the stability and sovereignty of all countries of the region,” Raisi said, making no mention of the billions of dollars his regime spends every year on terror proxies such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Hashd Al-Shabi in Iraq, the Assad regime in Syria, and the Houthis in Yemen.

Raisi exemplified Iran’s support in the region by praising Qassem Soleimani, the regime’s terror mastermind and the former commander of the terrorist Quds force, and said that without Soleimani’s efforts, the Islamic State would be the “Mediterranean neighbor of Europe.”

While Raisi was boasting and lying about his regime’s achievements, Iranians across the globe held rallies, exposing his crimes and calling for his prosecution in an international tribunal. Former political prisoners and families of prisoners and dissidents executed by Raisi and other regime officials made it clear in their rallies that Raisi does not represent the Iranian people and he does not deserve to be given a podium to address the world.
