Iran, Nov. 26, 2018 – The workers of Haft Tapeh sugar mill in Shush, Khuzestan province, began the 22nd day of their strikes and protests on Monday morning in front of the office of the mayor of Shush. The workers were chanting, “Workers will die but won’t give in to disgrace.”
The workers began their strikes earlier this month in protest to unpaid wages and the mismanagement of the factory. The workers are demanding the removal of the private owners of the company who have had a prominent role in driving it toward bankruptcy.
Haft Tapeh is the largest sugar factory in Iran and one of the largest in the Middle East. It employs thousands of workers in Khuzestan, who are the sole breadwinners for their families.

According to a report by the Free Union of Workers, a group of teachers, workers, civil rights activists have launched a campaign in support of the workers of Haft Tapeh. So far, hundreds of people have joined the campaign and expressed their support for the demands of the workers.
The workers of the Mahshahr petrochemical complex voiced their support for the workers of Haft Tapeh in a statement. “We would like to declare our full support for the workers of Haft Tapeh sugar mill. We are with you brave workers, and support your resistance until the end,” the petrochemical workers write.
The Union of Drivers also declared its support for the workers of Haft Tapeh. In its statement, the union writes, “We the members of the Union of Drivers from across the country declare our full support for the brave workers of Haft Tapeh who have been standing for their just rights.” 16 member organizations of the union have signed the statement.
