May 14, 2019 – Two Saudi oil tankers were sabotaged off the coast of the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, Saudi Oil Minister Khalid al-Falih said on Monday. The attack, according to the Saudi official, caused "significant damage" to the vessels off the coast of the UAE’s Port Fujairah. One of the ships was en-route to pick up Saudi oil to take to the United States.
Al-Falih condemned the attack saying the aim was to threaten the free flow of oil, safe maritime operation in the Persian Gulf and endanger the security of the oil producing countries in the region.
The announcement came hours after the Iranian regime and Lebanese media outlets aired false reports of explosions at the port in question.
The U.S. has warned that "Iran or its proxies" could be targeting maritime traffic in the region.
The U.S. has in recent days deployed an aircraft carrier, B-52 bombers, F-15 and F-35 bomber-attack warplanes to the Persian Gulf to counter anticipated threats from the theocratic regime ruling Iran.
Tensions have risen since U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew last year from the 2015 nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), restoring American sanctions that have pushed Iran’s economy into crisis.
The Iranian regime warned last week it would begin enriching uranium at higher levels in 60 days if world powers failed to negotiate new terms for the deal.
