Iran, September 1, 2020—The internal network of the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), known as the Resistance Units, organized various anti-regime activities across the country on August 31, commemorating the martyrs of the September 2013 massacre in Camp Ashraf and the martyrs of the November 2019 nationwide uprising.
On September 1, 2013, Iraqi Special Forces under the command of former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki raided Camp Ashraf, the residence of 100 MEK members, brutally murdering 52 residents and abducting seven others, including six women. Al-Maliki, who had very close ties to the Iranian regime, was thus hoping to curry favor with the mullahs in Tehran to gain support for a third term as prime minister.
Although the attack was condemned by the U.N. Secretary-General, U.S. Secretary of State, and the European Union foreign policy chief, it was never investigated by the international community and none of the perpetrators were ever brought to justice.
On the seventh anniversary of the Camp Ashraf massacre, the Iranian Resistance Units took to graffiti and installed handwritten slogans and pictures remembering the 52 martyrs.

During her speech marking the Ashraf massacre anniversary in 2019, Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) said: “I still remember the moment when I learned of the raid on Ashraf. I knew that the message of that unequal battle would spread throughout Iran, despite the outcome whatever it may be. Ashraf was drenched in blood but never died. The great sacrifice in Ashraf gave rise to 1,000 Ashrafs.”
The Resistance Units also commemorated the 1,500 martyrs of the November 2019 nationwide uprising by placing flowers alongside their pictures and renewing their pledge to continue their path.
These activities are a boost of hope and strength for many family members of the martyrs despite the regime’s repression and constant spread of despair across Iran’s society.
In the current powder-keg situation of Iran, these MEK Resistance Units activities play a key role in countering the regime’s suppressive measures and provide hope to millions of oppressed people inside Iran who yearn for freedom.
Throughout the month of August, Resistance Units expanded their activities to more than 76 cities across the country, including Tehran, Isfahan, Mashhad, Shiraz, Tabriz, Karaj, Abadan, Ardabil, Bojnurd, Gonbad, Babolsar, Mazandaran, Khorramabad, Sari, Qom, Rasht, Behbahan, Arak, Omidiyeh, Khomeini Shahr, Sistan and Baluchistan, Dehdasht, Ahvaz, Sanandaj, Qazvin, Behshahr, Shahr-e Quds, Dezful, Birjand, Hormozgan (Parsian), Chalus, Nishapur, Yazdanshahr, Ramsar, Zabol, Yazd, Zahedan, Shahin Shahr, Mahshahr, Galikesh (Golestan), Esfarayen (North Khorasan), Lahijan, Nain (Isfahan), Shushtar, Zanjan, Dezful, Kordkuy (Golestan), Kordkuy (Golestan), Marand (East Azerbaijan), Gorgan, Eslamshahr, Varamin, Avoj (Hamedan), Chaharmahal Bakhtiari, Langrud, Kermanshah, Saqqez, Kashan, Hormozgan, Doroud, Sardasht, Shahr-e Reza, Chabahar, Tehran (Bumahen), Kerman, Hashtgerd, Hamadan, Shahriar, Damavand, Bandarabbas, Shahre Quds, Javanrud, Masjed Soleiman, Babol, Bandar Anzali, and Borujerd.
