Opposition member: Iran’s society is a powder keg

Analysis by PMOI/MEK

Iran, Aug. 12, 2019 – “The Iranian regime is facing explosive circumstances inside the country. Based on information gathered by the [Iranian opposition coalition] National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the month of July alone witnessed more than 280 protest rallies across Iran,” said NCRI member Shahin Ghobadi in an interview with Sky News.

“During the past few weeks, teachers in numerous cities have been seen protesting because their demands have not been met. Last week the Interior Minister specifically said we have to be ready for developing events. Therefore, regime officials understand these signals very well. This regime is now completely bankrupt and engulfed in corruption. Based on statistics issued by the World Bank, inflation in Iran has reached 50 percent. It is worth noting that this is the highest level of inflation since this regime has been in power. Of course, these are very conservative numbers and even based on numbers issued by the Iranian regime, millions of people, meaning around 70 percent of the country’s population, are living under the poverty line,” he added.

“Therefore, it is quite natural that in such circumstances, we will be witnessing increasing measures by the [Iranian opposition group] People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) and their members against the regime. This is why the current circumstances in Iran are explosive and the regime is very concerned about the future. As a result, such warnings shed light on the very difficult situation before the mullahs’ regime,” Ghobadi continued.

“It is worth noting that the Iranian people have realized there are no differences between various factions inside the regime. In 2018 at the beginning of the protests, some claimed the reformists had returned to the scene in Iran. However, the people’s chants showed these claims are nothing but illusions and at the end of the day, these currents all represent the mullahs’ regime,” the NCRI member explained.

“Despite resorting to a heavy crackdown, the Iranian regime has failed in stopping the ongoing protests. The PMOI/MEK’s activities are continuing their growing trend and regime officials are failing to stop them. Thus, this proves that this movement, alongside youths and other branches of society, have made significant accomplishments,” he added.

“The de-escalation policies pursued by the United States in the past, throwing a lifeline to the Iranian regime, have come to an end. As a result, these events and facts are placing the Iranian regime before an unprecedented reality. What is taking place and what we can say with utter certainty is that the status quo has become more difficult and this regime’s days are numbered… Right now, [the regime’s Supreme Leader Ali] Khamenei is saying the regime does not have many options while circumstances are deteriorating fast.”
