Mecca, June 2, 2019 – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation held a summit Friday night in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Participants spoke at the opening session of the summit, protesting the terrorist attacks in Saudi Arabia and the aggression against four commercial ships off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. In the final communique, OIC members also condemned these attacks in the strongest terms.

Condemning terrorism

King Salman of Saudi Arabia hosted the summit in Mecca on Saturday. In his speech at the opening session, King Salman slammed the Iranian regime over recent attacks targeting Saudi oil pipelines, describing the measures as “terrorist acts” threatening global energy supplies. Speaking to leaders from OIC countries, King Salman said the world must fight the sources and funding of terrorism around the world.

He then said the sabotage attacks on four oil tankers off the UAE coast some weeks ago represent a “grave danger” to the security of maritime traffic and regional security.

He blamed the Iran-backed terrorist Houthi militias of being behind a subsequent drone attack on vital Saudi oil facilities.

“We emphasize that these subversive terrorist acts are aimed not only at the kingdom and the Gulf region but also on the security of navigation and energy supplies to the world,” King Salman said.

Saudi Arabia’s efforts to bring leaders to Mecca reflect the kingdom’s desire to project a unified Muslim and Arab position to isolate Iran internationally, according to the Associated Press.

Among those attending the summit were Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Sabah, and Abdel-Fattah Burhan, head of Sudan’s ruling military council.

President el-Sissi also condemned the Houthi attacks against Saudi oil installations, emphasizing that Egypt will not hesitate to support the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

The Emir of Kuwait also condemned the oil tankers attacks, reiterating how “the region and our Islamic nations are facing unprecedented challenges and grave dangers.”

Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa also pointed to the recent terrorist attacks, calling on the international community to assist regional countries to ensure the safe traffic of oil in the Gulf.

Nigerian President Mohammad Bokhari also reiterated that this summit is taking place in circumstances that the Islamic World is facing numerous challenges with terrorism being the most important.

Adel al Jubeir, Saudi Arabia's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, asserted that Mecca's three Gulf, Arab and Islamic summits send a clear message that rejects sabotage and the recent terrorist attacks carried out by Iran’s regime.

Arab, Gulf and Muslim countries will never tolerate such hostile acts, al Jubeir said during a press conference after the summits.

“I think the world is coming to the conclusion and the realization of the importance of pressing Iran to comply with international law and to act as a country rather than a revolution and abandon the principle of exporting the revolution which is enshrined in its constitution,” Al Arabiya quoted al Jubeir saying.

Alliance against Tehran

In its final communique, the Organization of Islamic Conference Summit condemned Iran’s recent aggressions as “terrorist attacks.” The communique also reiterated that these attacks are targeting the interests of regional governments and the free flow of oil to the world. The summit expressed its full support for Saudi Arabia’s efforts to defend its national security and oil productions.

The statement also condemned the recent sabotage attacks targeting four tankers off the UAE coast, describing the attacks as a criminal act endangering the security of free international navigation. It calls on the global community to act upon its obligations to ensure the security of maritime trafficking.
